Hanging at a local watering hole in the afternoon with some friends and a guy brings out a guitar to pass around--and I loved this thing! It's the Martin DX-2 12 String with Fishman pickup, I think made in Mexico, Sweetwater and others sell for $649, and the reviews across the board are really positive. I liked the sound and the playability and even when I pounded on it rather hard on a couple of songs I never had to adjust tuning. The guy had it dropped down a whole step which really helped my fingers. Anyway, just wondering if a $650 import can be a decent guitar? Any experience out there?

Not sure if I've seen a 12-string in that price point yet. The plastic back/sides with spruce top guitars sometimes sound pretty darn good. They are braced lightly and tend to not take abuse all that well, but if you take care of them it should be fine.
I'd be inclined to try it at standard tuning and see if you still are in love with it (assuming you'd play your own in standard tuning), since you might have loved the detuned part more than anything about that guitar in particular.

Thanks for comments, FK. My Gibson SJ does not work well tuned down. It gets tubby with an overpowering bass. That Martin sounded surprisingly rich and resonant. The dropped tuning also made singing much easier. My hands won't reliably fret clear bar chords on an acoustic any more, so I play mostly open chords, and some songs have me capo-ing way up the neck trying to find a key to sing along. The dropped tuning really helps with that.

I'd be sure to get one with a good return policy - in case it was the particular guitar's resonance.
That's even more likely on a cheapie acoustic!
