Hi! I decided to get my first bass as I have a bunch of different guitars, and thought maybe I could sit in sometime with some pals. I got an Ibanez Talman 30 short scale bass, from SW for the princely sum of $229. (My arms are not long enough for a long-scale). Here's what I got: -Weighs 7.5 lbs -flawless fit and finish -simple controls and a lot of varied sounds -I like the Strat output jack -The frets are just fine. Smooth, no sharp ends. Nice fretboard. -Hardware seems fine. Tuners are smooth and keep tune. I adjusted the setup somewhat- relief was fine at 0.015; I lowered the action a little; the nut clearance was too much so I adjusted to 0.022 above first fret. Tweaked the intonation a little. Now the playability is great! Although probably not an important attribute for playing, you hit a note on an open string and it sustains for a LONG time. Pretty solid setup. So if you want an inexpensive bass, I recommend this one. The long-scale version is an additional $20. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TMB30BK--ibanez-tmb30-talman-standard-black

Did you get the Black, Ivory or Mint Green? Wow, that is a minimalist adjustment bass I am short with short arms. I handle long scale by holding the neck at an ~40 degree upward angle. I never have felt comfortable holding an instrument at the horizontal position. It also helps those basses that tend to have a little neck dive.

I got the black one. I'm pretty surprised it is so nice for so cheap. I don't think I've ever used an Ibanez that wasn't good. My jam band mate plays a 335 style Ibanez that is sweet.

I gotta admit, that jack plate with the one knob on it is pretty cool. Could use that setup on a P-bass and forgo the pickguard. (I never use my tone knob on any setting but "10"!)

I don't need or want a short-scale BUT...since these were released they've caught and kept my eye. Maybe down the road a bit I'll grab one...

I had a couple of Ibanez's GTR200 basses 10-15 years ago which are priced the same as the Talman. 34" scale, with P-J pickups, they were incredibly light. The necks were fast, contoured for my smaller hands but a bit whippy.
I kept running into them lightly used at cheap prices so that I couldn't refuse. I played them way more than my anvil-heavy Jazz Plus. Why didn't they have basses like these when I started playing bass 55 years ago? Instead I suffered through a white Howard pseudo-P and a sunburst Blackjack violin bass.
That Talman bass looks fun!

This review wasn't just inexpensive, it was FREE! I read the whole thing without paying a dime!
(Sorry. I'll see myself out.)

I saw a photo of a Talsman someone had modded and thought it looked interesting. They dropped in a Seymour Duncan Pbass pickup and put a TBird pickup in the bridge position , and changed the bridge. I was all set to buy one and do something similar. It looked hot.

My limited experiences with Ibanez basses has been good.
I went through whatever 32” bass models I could find after deciding to quit playing long scales. There are more options now but none that was available at the time was exactly what I wanted, which led me to Warmoth SSB bodies and necks. The only 32” factory model I kept is an old Ibanez RS721.
Recently, Spector’s 32” Bantam 5 caught my eye. I was (and still am) reluctant to drop that kind of cash on something I might not use much; so I picked up a used Ibanez SRMD205 for a low budget 5 string introduction. The jury is still out on my interest in 5 strings, but it’s surprisingly nice for the price.

I’m a fan of those TBird pickups. I have a little DCJr with one and just love it.
I’ve cooled down a bit on the Ibanez modding project, but might well return to it.

I’ve made arrangements to pick up a short scale passive Talman. Unfortunately the seller has Covid and is in quarantine. And I’ve ordered a Tbird style pickup for the bridge. And have an old grey bobbin Fender Pbass pickup I’m going to place in the forward position.

I stoped by a Guitar Center on the way to a sheep and wool festival near Ocala. The manager came over to where I was playing a high end bass. He pointed out a Squier Bronco. His opinion was that it was the best bass in the store at the time. He was correct it, had it all, and @ $149, I couldn’t pass on it. I put a set of good flatwounds on it. I even replaced the pickup with a Guild Bisonic. Which cost more than the bass, it’s a great combination, and a wonderful short scale player. I’ve had a lot of fun with this bass.
There are people out there that will pass judgment on a musician based on their choice of instruments. I get a kick out of their confusion once I start playing.

I have the usual assortment of classic basses. And these days I seem to enjoy short scale , and cheaper basses. I do tend to use nice amps.
