I had to put a new EF86 in my hand wired AC15H1TV about a year ago because the old one had gotten microphonic. From what I hear that's a typical EF86 combo amp problem. I have hardly used the amp since I put the new tube in it. I used it for one recording session. I bought a Celestion Alinico Blue speaker for it a couple weeks ago to replace the Greenback that's in it. I decided to just put the Blue into an external cabinet. I never take that amp anywhere anyway and if I do I can just use the Greenback that's in it. I found an old Gibson, single 12" combo amp cabinet for $60. The amplifier section is missing. That should do nicely. I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow.
This will make for an easy comparison between the Greenback and Blue as well. If I like the Blue a lot better I may just sell the Greenback to recover some of the cost of the Blue. I'm not gigging anymore and all I do is record here at home. If I sold the Greenback and needed to take the amp somewhere I could just either take the extra cabinet or put the Blue into the Vox cabinet. OR I could just take the Twin and a couple pedals.
I sure do love the sound of that amp. It's only 15 watts but has that big amp character. An A/B switch makes it to where I can have 2 drastically different amp sounds at the touch of a button or just a clean and dirty channel.
This solves 2 issues for me. It helps keep from shaking the dickens out of the EF86 and it also allows me to put the external speaker cabinet in the walk-in closet in the other room when recording loud guitars without the amp over heating. I can also keep the amplifier in the studio so I have access to the controls while setting it up to record. Now I just need to make a long heavy duty speaker cable to reach to the other end of the house. For a run that long it will need to be beefy cable. Any ideas on what gauge I should use?
