I’ve been aware of a boutique tube preamp known as Monique , crafted by Jule in California for some years now. They’re hand built , with point to point wiring by Jule , the designer. It’s a one man shop. They are said to give a Class D head that elusive warm tube thing.
They are not generally sold in stores , every once in a while one will pop up in the TB Classifieds. One appeared just after Christmas and was immediately sold. I missed it. I have read many testimonials by those that have bought them. Despite the price most seem to be in awe of how they sound.
Well another surfaced recently and this time I managed to snag it.I had hoped to find one last year , but it finally happened. She arrived intact , and I’ve been using it with various amps at home , done gigs with it and carted it off to rehearsals. For gigs and rehearsals I’ve been using my Bergantino Forte as the back end , going in through the effects loop to bypass the Forte’s front end and tone stack and using Monique as the front end. Well she sounds like a 700watt B15.
I’m in love.

The right preamp is everything.
I was so CLOSE for almost 30 years with the Space Echo's preamp (which di EVERYTHING to make me happy, on guitar or bass or keys or....), na sealed the deal the minute I got one of the Puletc EQP rackmount clones. The add/subtract interaction on it is everything I ever wanted - whether i'm just noodling or mixing.
I REALLY need to get another one.

I’ve been using an Aguilar DB680 tube preamp for 20+ years and I’m very satisfied with it driving a Crown K2 amp giving 800 watts per channel at 4 ohms into a pair of EA VL210 4 ohm cabinets.

I have had several over the years from SWR to Genz Benz to Mesa Boogie TT-800. They are not hand wired like yours but I agree they do add some flavor. I like all but the SWR which ran their preamp tubes at about 120vdc which is running them relatively cold. The Genz Benz and Mesa Boogie run in the range of 300+ vdc. (don't know the exact voltage without looking it up again). Laker, I like the tone of the Aguilar

I have a couple of amps with tube preamps , an SWR HeadLite and a GenzBenz Streamliner 900. Two slightly older Class D heads. The preamps certainly contribute to the warmth , but Monique takes that to an entirely different level. When you run the preamp through the effects loop you bypass the tone stack and front end of the amp entirely. So it’s easy to dial in an amp to your liking , and then plug in Monique through the back end and instantly compare.

The only stand-alone tube preamps I recall owning were a couple of Alembic F-1Xs if you don't count the Universal Audio LA-610 Mk II I had about 10 years ago.

I had been completely satisfied with my amp and sound , but had been hankering to try Monique and have now taken a step sideways.
You just never know. I’ve jumped from modern clean hifi back to warm thick tubey. But tubey with some serious slam.

I’ve exchanged some emails with Jule. Wonderful guy. And funny. I’ve also become a believer. Monique really is a wonderful thing. And at rehearsals and gigs she is a gift.
