So, I definitely need one for my Marshall SV20H.
I have a Hot Plate built into my THD Univalve, but other than that I have not used any. Seems like there’s a lot of choice in the $500-700 range, and I’m thinking of either the Rivera Rockcrusher (best name) or the Tone King Iron Man (could even be the mini).
Anyone with thoughts or opinions on options?

I picked one of these used on Reverb a few year ago. I like it a lot. It’s as transparent an attenuator as I’ve found whether I want to knock a little or a lot off. drzamps.com/product/z-air-brake/

I've been VERY pleased with the Weber MiniMass - the treble boost options on the thing are good, and it does silent load.
Also it doubles as a "match any cabinet to any amp with switchable I/O impedance with multiple ohmage outs.

The only one I ever used was the old big knobbed Altair PW5 back in the 70s/80s. Its kinda shocking that a lot of the contemporary ones cost as much as some amps.

That is just a master volume; it won’t work for getting the power amp section cooking.

Seem to be the only reactive ones in the sub-$400 range.

It's one of the best utility investments I ever made.

I have a really old Mini-Mass.
Had Clark add an on-board one when he built me a Beaufort Special (5E3 Tweed Deluxe clone).

Yea, mine is probably twenty years old or so, I got it used from a friend who got sick and wasn't playing live any more.

I have both the Bogner and a Swart 15 watter. Both work well.

I’ve used just about all of them. The Rivera Rockcrusher is hands down the best of the bunch. In a tie was one that this pilgrim on The Gear Page used to build. IIRC, it was called Alex’s Attenuator, or maybe that was just the fella’s name, and I don’t know if he’s still around or still builds them, or not.
Anyway, you can go out to sound Cloud and search my name and listen to a clip of the Rivera.

I’m pretty sure (I’d have to check to be sure) I still have mine. I know I still have the Rockcrusher. I don’t think I ever did a recording of the Alex. I only did the Rockcrusher because someone asked me to. That’s probably been 10 years. Lol

I have been using the Ultimate Attenuator now for 20 years with no issues. It has two smothe turn volume knobs that are footswichable so you can kick it up for leads or more clean at band level. The smooth turn makes it like a volume knob where as the others have click down levels so you cant dial them in good. you got eitheer down one click or two. My UA lets you dial in exactly what you want and the dual volume is great. it is super transparent also

Having owned both a Super Lead 100 and a 50 watt JCM 800, I can say that at least the JCM was manageable at reasonable volumes, due to the master volume.

Yeah, but that won’t do the cooking sound you get when truly opening it up. The SV20 has this glorious clean tone that begins when it’s already too loud, and the overdrive is then of course amazing, but easily over 100dBs by the time you get it.
I may get the SC20 eventually for the different tone, but not as a substitute.

I’ve got a SC20H. It is a different tone. I’ve got a 1987 for the 4-holer tone.

Anyone with thoughts or opinions on options? I bought the Tone King Iron Man ll to use with my Marshall SV20C. It was probably overkill as the mini would have been fine but I want a 1987X someday and the ll will (I think) work better imho! The only amp my wife has complained about being to loud is my SV20C!! The Iron Man ll stopped that! Lots of options and opinions so I'd just listen a lot and trust your own ears.
