Working on a Strat that's been here before that came in for a new pickguard and pickups. I got these pots from Stooge Mac about six years ago; they are unbranded, definitely offshore origin. When I did a refresh on this guitar several years ago I installed these and they worked fine up until today. They have tab numbers and are marked for their spec. Cast pot metal base plate. I have a bag of 'em and am wondering if I should just toss the lot into the bin. If you're never going to change knobs, I guess they'll be okay...but it didn't take much for the shaft to slide right out. There's no practical way to repair these things.

I haven't had that happen yet and have changed a lot of pots in the last few years. I've only been buying CTS and Alphas and have noticed most rarely are close to spec (i.e. a 250k around 220k).

I’ve had that happen once. It draws inward greatly.
That looks like an Alpha knock-off.

It happens to us from time to time. Such is life - little jobs sometimes turn into big jobs, and it is always good to have the skills to do the bigger job if the smaller job goes sideways on you. Some knobs are way too tight, sometimes they have the wrong number of knurls and they get forced on, sometimes some knucklehead glues them on. Sometimes you just aren't lucky.
If I was king of all guitars, I'd force every guitar and guitar knob to be solid shaft with set screw because of this. Unfortunately most of the knobs that people prefer are for split shaft - pretty much every Gibson knob as well as Strat knobs. Split shaft works just fine... until they don't.

I've had that happen once.
Alpha and CTS are the only ones I buy.

Personally, I wouldn't toss the bag of 'em and do a knob-on-and-off-a-few-times test before installing.

I decided to keep 'em for the weird disposable electrical experiments I sometimes do.
Is it "upcycling" to use trash before it's been in the trash? I think that's cheating!

A few years ago I tried pulling the knobs off my 72 LP Custom and sure enough I yanked the pot stem out of the bridge pickup volume. I changed the whole wiring harness with a Jonesyblues kit. I added speed knobs too, which I was trying to do in the first place. 🤣

I bought some reflector knobs for my Epi es-335 pro and they fit good...right until you try pulling them up for single coil action. No single coil action, just a loose knob in your hand.
(OK, there's a joke in there somewhere, lol).

This is clearly the result of Karma or a pie deficiency in your diet. While trying to install knobs on a Gibson, I’ve blown out the back of similar pots. I’ve also significantly injured fingernail beds trying to pull the knobs off.
