Not that I'm even pondering it for a second but a local act brought this to mind. We've got a place nearby where a guy performs outside on a stage pretty much sized for an orchestra. Classical guitar, a bass on a stand and a looper. All instrumental. He starts by scatching, tapping his guitar for a beat. He'll lay down a rhythm track, move over to the bass on a stand and lay that part down. Then he moves into the body of the song. The mix is superb and this guy's got chops that could probably pull off Paco de Lucia, really really talented. Very enjoyable for 3 or 4 songs then its just sadly becomes redundant. Scattered golf claps.
For a cat that talented I don't know how it doesn't beat him down. I guess its probably the paycheck and maybe free beer.
I could bet this guy pegged me as a player out in the audience. A rare minor flub and I turned my head toward him casually. We lock eyes, he laughed with that look that said "oh, you caught that, haha".
I don't nearly have the skill to pull something like this off but don't think I could even if I did. If he's happy then more power to him.
Anyone doing the solo acoustic gigs?

Me.
I use a Boss RC - 500. Last generation but has a lot of features.
I also use a very basic tc electronics Ditto. Normally when Guinness is involved
I would recommend a Ditto or a similarly cheap looper and just see how you get on. I know you really want to.
I’m more of a musical, layering guy than a tapper and sound effects person. I reckon that gets old fast.
I play Celtic tunes and songs (trad Irish and Scottish- not football related) and can normally keep people involved during the process.
Especially if they fancy a shot at singing along to a song that’s just appeared - as if by magic.

Never even owned an acoustic guitar, mine is a guitar synth set on "nylon string." That said, been looping since the days of sound on sound on the tape-based RE-301. He may just ENJOY the gigs. Some of us don't play for the audience, but for an internal muse. His might need an audience. Mine hasn't in twenty years - I got it out of my system and became a studio rat myself, but the "chase my own muse" is EVERYTHING still. As I told people for a long time, quoting Rocky Horror, "I didn't make him for YOU."

Some of us don't play for the audience, but for an internal muse. Good perspective. My reason for quitting gigging isn't applicable to everyone else. He did look like he was enjoying himself and probably keeping his chops up. Rock on, loop on.

Is he playing covers or originals? Was he working his own material out?

Is he playing covers or originals? Was he working his own material out? I didn't stay for more than a set but everything I heard was arrangements of cover tunes.

I would only watch an expert looper(or guitar player) for a short time if all they were doing was cover tunes or technical scale "songs".
Don't get me wrong though, doing cover tunes exactly right is the higher challenge most of the time !
But if I want cover tunes, I can turn on the radio or stream music.
However, I will watch a really creative performer make up stuff on the fly and have a blast doing it, for as long as they have the drive and energy for it.
Someone doing covers strikes me as someone looking for a gig.
I'd rather listen and watch artistic people do attractive artistic things, perhaps using unique equipment and the most popular styles of music blended.
But if someone can really sing and perform covers, sure, I'll appreciate that any day !
Not much chance of seeing that without a hefty ticket outlay for a concert somewhere.
So, in reality, loopers are best for a one man band, inspiring practice, inspiration idea capture, and a blunt reality check of where one's skill levels are...and need to go.
So hats off to a great looping one-man cover band, but if they can't perform their pants off, and looping is all he can handle(understandable)...
then he's not going to be all that interesting for long. To me.
That kind of looper is a tech head. A good tech head perhaps ! But that's not enough.
The lack of audience appreciation probably reflected this.
