I totally get it. I had to do that to our morkie in November . It was really hard. Three years before that my wife’s shih tzu had to be put down . My shih tzu Jada is 13 and failing . Her time is not far off. I’m 64 and my wife is 67 . I was not a dog owner before I met her . My pets had feathers in the shape of Charlie and Gracie ( who are now in their mid 20s ). It sucks when we get older and all of our pets start dying off. Saying goodbye is gut wrenching , but I wouldn’t trade those moments of pet ownership for anything.

I get it. We have had retired racer Greyhounds continuously since 1995, but Gracie is my last and the time is coming soon - possibly this week. She’s almost 14 which is a really good run for a Grey. When we adopted her Linda was home all the time, but after I lost Linda Gracie had to get used to being alone a lot.
Now Kelly and I want to be able to travel, we won’t be adopting another pet of any kind.

Our 9 year old 130 pound Alaskan Malamute is slowing down quickly over the past 6 months. I'm not sure he will last until his 10th birthday in October but he still gets around okay. He's just getting where getting up is an effort for him. He'll still run and play with the younger dogs occasionally. It's going to be really hard for me when his time comes but it's been that way with every dog I have ever had. Some worse than others. I love big dogs but don't know if I'll ever have another one. I don't have the sasquatch-strength I used to have and as we age a big dog could trip us up easier than a smaller one. I will have at least one dog as long as possible but in my heart I can't imagine having to make them start another life with someone else when our time comes. We don't have or know anyone who would take them and give them a good home and that breaks my heart. I have had dogs my entire life and can't imagine a life without one but that decision will have to be made in the next few years. I'm 65 now and still in very good health but that can change quickly and when it does I don't want my dog(s) to pay the price by uprooting their lives. I love them too much to do that to them.

My brother just put down his German Shepherd "Luger" (Louie) yesterday. A big Shep that was trained in getting the bad guy and won a number of awards. But the dog was a gentle creature as well. He could take a piece of popcorn from your lips without you practically knowing it. We got to see him last summer and he looked rough, walking crooked because of his wrecked hindquarters. That's the other part. In addition to the fateful and tormenting day you part with your friend, its the days, weeks, months or even years leading up to it. The knowing the inevitable and soul searching to decide when is the right time.

I need to put Gracie down tomorrow, the at home vet is coming. 13.75 years with 12 of that with me, that’s really good for a Greyhound. I’m going to miss her horribly but no more pets.

Thanks everyone. It was hard, but needed. I got her ashes back yesterday, and they will go on the shelf with the other dog’s.
I still listen for her. I think that will happen for a long time since I don’t have any dogs left to distract me.

I think that will happen for a long time since I don’t have any dogs left to distract me. When we had to put down our first dog, my wife and I were a basket case for days. It was an hour before we could drive home. About a week later I moved her collar and tags jingled. My wife was in the same room and she just fell apart. While she was gone I moved it to a safe spot....she wanted me to toss it, but I couldn't.

I still listen for her. I think that will happen for a long time since I don’t have any dogs left to distract me. The grief can be unbearable. When we put down the dog previous to the last it felt like the power was out in the house when I came home. I learned it's a good idea to change environment for a bit after such an event. Go on a vacation, visit family, anything to break the routine of the "pack".

Condolences HD. I’ve been through it many times with both dogs and a couple of cats. It’s always hard, but I’ve continually kept having more dogs in our lives. I guess for me the joy of having them, short as it may be compared to our lifetime, gives happiness.
(I always joke that I should’ve just got a Macaw or Tortoise and let the kids/grandkids deal with the pets’ late in life trials. )

I’ve always been a dog person and my first, that came into my life when I was four years old, was buried behind my parent’s garage when I was eighteen. I stayed away from dog ownership until I purchased a puppy for my ex-wife that came with me after the divorce, and because of always traveling playing with bands, ended up being my mother’s favorite pet (but always considered to be my dog). It was painful when he was “put to sleep” because of old age in ‘95 and I think I didn’t want to go through that again. I had thought about buying a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, but no, I’m not doing that heartache again. Incidentally, my mother loved my dog so much, per her wishes, his ashes were buried with her when she passed away two years ago.

My late wife and I made a plan for ashes. After both of us are gone, our ashes and those of our dogs will be combined and spread on a specific beach in Wisconsin. Now that I’ve remarried, my wife will do that with half of my ashes. (My wife is much younger than I am and will likely outlive me.)

A good friend used to spend time there when it was known as the nude beach.
