Probably can be posted in the Recording Forum too. Jim loves to go down those rabbit holes. Cool steel guitar Starwars nod...

"If you disagree, send me your favorite unrecorded guitar tone" ROFLMAO!! He's SO right!
This is his best video.
I do notice though that he ignores both mic choice, position, and EQ in the recording signal chain. Had he included those factors that can dramatically alter the sound that gets recorded, it owuld perhaps have driven his point home even harder.

This was an informative video and fun to watch. I’ve never dared to record my tone! LOL

enjoyed that video. Caused a bit of reflection on what sounds and why I have chased them. If I'm in the "hey that sounds like.... " area, I am usually happy. Never obessed over it tho'

To borrow my own line from another forum, I enjoy Lill's videos and he seems like a likable guy, but I'm tired of him interfering in my episodes of magical thinking.🤣

My tone was returned. He wouldn’t sign for it.

One statement Jim makes that I disagree with is the assertion that every guitar tone we've heard on a recording goes through a microphone. Not really.
Many pros record and gig direct.
Matter of fact, one of the albums he shows in the vid (Yoakam's Best Of) has Pete Anderson on Tele, who toured with and produced albums for Dwight. Anderson has made no secret about his preference for recording with a Line 6 POD in the studio and playing live as well, because he can always get the exact same tone every time. He does have an amp behind him on the stage, but his guitar runs through a POD.
Crazy, no?

I agree 100% about microphone choice being a vital tonal aspect. Mic positioning also plays a huge part in recording electric guitar. On axis, off axis, distant, close, etc, comes into play in a big way. If there's some distance between the mic and amp then the room enters into this equation as well. Mic preamp choice also plays a part but that doesn't have as much effect on tone as much as how it's controls are set. Even then it is not all that important unless you are comparing a Neve to a Radio Shack preamp.
The player has as much effect on the quality of the tone as anything. IMO it's about 50/50 player/equipment. 40/60 at best. You can put a great player on a crappy guitar and amp and that will almost always sound better than a bad player on great equipment. A great player will know how to avoid the bad characteristics of the gear and find something that will work in a good way. A bad or inexperienced player won't know how to do that. I have also worked with great players who have no idea how to coax a good tone out of the equipment. I have also worked with experienced players who were only adequate who could get great sounds out of their gear.
Again, for me, it's about how the gear reacts to my playing that does it for me. 2 different amps may sound almost the same but how they react to touch is completely different and THAT will alter the tone because the player responds to it differently.

He did address the direct thing too. Yes. I immediately thought of Nile Rodgers (most of the Chic stuff was direct) and Steve Lukather played a lot of his clean funky lines straight in too.
