I recently sent an email to an old friend I have known and played in may bands with since high school. He's a drummer. He replied and although he hasn't played drums for years he wanted to collaborate on some recordings. He was always a gifted drummer and had practically zero limitations as far as his abilities. I sent him a track I recorded back in the 2010's that had nothing but a basic rhythm on a drum machine I used as a reference to overdub all the tracks to. I also had another keyboard player friend who was one of my besties who passed away back in 2020. All three of use were very close and used to play in original and cover bands as well as record on the keyboard player's songs and would jam often back in the day. I seldom used the keyboard player to play keys on any of my recordings because I could usually do it and that was more convenient.
The song with the drum machine part was one I couldn't seem to play a keyboard track I liked for the song so I had my keyboard player buddy come over and do it on the Hammond. It turned out great when he did it. I never was happy with just having the drum machine part on the song and when the opportunity to have a real drummer play on it came up I was excited to have that happen. The fact that it is my good ol' buddy playing drums on the track with the other two of us on it makes it very special. That can never happen again. The old band is back together one more time even if it is just on the recording. This makes me happy because I'm the guy who introduced the other two to each other way back in the 70's. The fact that the other two guys became such close friends as well makes it even better.
Godspeed Tim. You are greatly missed.
