I’ve never had to sell one. But, I was recently named as Guardian for someone and it will be part of my duties. Seems like it’ll be a lot of work. I’m up to the challenge.

So dar we have bought 5 and sold 3. We did serious remodeling/fix up to this one. We have been living in it all the while. Very stressful! Off to Maine next week. Come back next year to do the other house. Hopefully we have learned enough to make it a little easier next time.

I worked on emptying my mother's home for a year and a half before selling it. I lucked out when a girl bought some furniture and decided to buy the house too. Before that happened I was praying that lightning would strike and burn it down because I was so tired of trying to get rid of stuff.

Before that happened I was praying that lightning would strike and burn it down because I was so tired of trying to get rid of stuff. I have a four pronged plan for when it’s time for me to clean out my parents’ house (it will fall to me to do it, not my sister, because that’s just the way things are). 1. Search for anything very valuable and/or cash, divide 50/50 between me and my sister. 2. Set a date certain for my sister to come in (she lives out of town) to select any items that she wants to keep, and she has to take them with her. 3. Hire someone to host an Estate sale for a percentage commission, and clear out as much as possible. 4. 1-800-Got-Junk. I have a similar plan for the house in my Guardianship, but the valuables get sold and the money (along with any found money, which is not likely) goes into the Guardianship account, and there’s no family to pick through and see what they want. So that’s just three prongs.

So that’s just three prongs. Be prepared for this…my mother left a list of “who should get this” and when I contacted those people…nobody wanted the items offered. This was stuff like cut glass, crystal, fine china, antiques, etc. Even the local antique dealer didn’t want stuff saying “ugly is is and nobody wants the pretty stuff”. This made emptying out the property a long, painful process as I gave away many things my parents held dear rather than throw the articles in the trash.

As of now, I know that they don’t have any such lists. And I’m a hardass, I have no problem throwing things away.

My MIL did the same thing with a list of items and to whom they go. Other than a couple jewelry items, it was all crap like bird figurines she ordered from Parade magazine that comes with the Sunday paper.

Finally finished the remodel last nite. We drop keys with the realtor and head for Maine today. Fix up on house took 8 months of 10 to 12 hour days 6 or 7 days a week. We are exhausted, but we made it. YAY!
