especially the surfer stuff, but some of their tunes like this are amazing. Lyrics aside which are great, listen to those CHANGES, so sophisticated, no one was writing like this in pop, except maybe Stevie Wonder and Burt Bacharach, and no wonder they blew the Beatles away, who knows what was going on in Brian Wilsons head but some of it borders on genius. Instead of a normal turn around at the end it goes right back to the top, really unusual and pulls on your ear, that's what music is about, no?

True Dat ... as we say in ghetto ... I also like this cover by the Mona Lisa Twins. Less complex version, but still great harmonies.

God Only Knows is a beautiful song. My appreciation of Brian Wilson, and particularly Pet Sounds, has grown over the years.

Long-time Beach Boys fan here. I followed them from the early stuff right through their musical growth. I used to annoy my Beatlemaniac brother. Listening to Beatle albums, I would point out where certain musical ideas on Beatles albums had appeared on earlier Beach Boys albums.

I love the Beach Boys. This was the song my daughter chose for the father daughter wedding dance.

I bought an 8-track of Petsounds while in high school because I liked Good Vibrations and Sloop John B. I listened to it maybe twice and gave it away.

It’s a lovely song.
I revisited Pet Sounds around ten years ago and, other than the couple of songs Leftymeister mentioned, I still couldn’t connect with it.

I came around to The Beach Boys in a weird way. I also wrote them off as a surfer boy band. Then a friend/former bandmate that's a great Tele player and who I really admire released an eclectic record. Listening, their was a certain tonality about his voice and clever changes that lead me to think of Brian Wilson. It was kinda weird because this guy's playing style is very much rooted in old blues and R&B where he has a scholarly knowledge. We corresponded and he revealed that he was indeed a huge Beach Boys fan. I did a bit of a dive, particularly into Pet Sounds.
Huge respect for Brian Wilson.

^I certainly enjoy surf music and The Beach Boys in general^ I just couldn’t warm to that particular LP. Wilson deserves all the accolades he gets.

I was never a Beach Boys fan either but they have a small handfull of songs that are great. I also have a huge amount of respect for Brian Wilson. I never could get into the surfer stuff and that made me avoid them for decades.

Pet Sounds opened my ears to the Beach Boys and now I love it all- the earlier surfing/hot rod stuff to the Carl Wilson led post-Pet Sounds albums. I absolutely love Sunflower, Friends, Surf's Up, Holland and the "In Concert" album.
