Hey is it possible to just drive through DC quickly and glimpse the sights? I really don't want to miss the opportunity but my wife is iffy on the time and trouble involved. Thanks.

I was there 14 years ago and as I saw DC ... you won't see much from the car.
Definitely a walk the sites kind of place.

Probably the best you could do is park by a metro station far out at the end of the line, ride the Metro to the mall, get out and walk around a bit, see the sights, and then go back to your car.

Hopefully the car will be there when you get back.
We must remember he does have a 2 year old dog.

I worked in DC for 15 years, and I still live close by (Annapolis). There's no "good time" to do it because rush hour begins at 6:30 am and ends at 8:30 pm. I am not joking. BUT do not let this scare you. If you have the opportunity to drive through, do it. Think about it this way: your goal is to see some sights--not minimize your travel time. And it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Why not? Get a full tank of gas and a pee break before you venture inside the DC beltway. No matter which way you approach the city, come in via I-95 or I-66, get onto 495 (the DC beltway) and then get onto highway 395 (expressway) through the city. Best views are from 395 on the south side near the Potomac River: The Mall, Pentagon, Arlington, etc., in the center of the map below. That's if you want to stay on a highway, which I recommend. It can get to stop-and-go traffic, but don't get discouraged because that is an every day thing. Expect it, and it becomes part of the experience and not a hinderance. Seriously. If you get off the highway in DC, then I cannot help you There are a LOT of one-way streets in DC and they will get you all discombobulated if you get too adventurous.

I had a few hours to kill while my wife was at a conference, and we took the train in, no car. There's a bus service, the 'Circulator' which circles all the interesting sights around the mall, $1 fee (also senior discount). Consider this instead of driving hassles and paying parking. For a buck to get on, you can hop on and off at a few targeted areas, and get a good overview for price of parking. dccirculator.com/circulator-map-and-information-guide/

The last time I was in DC was the 90's and I swore I'd never go back. That said I'm glad I did the tour.

My fiance's sister lives in Arlington. We went there about a year ago for a couple of days. They know how to get around so we loaded up there pickup with Razors (actually not Razors but I forget the brand) and rode to all the sites. These things will do 50 mph. It was a blast and we saw everything.

We lived just outside of DC when I was a kid -- you couldn't see everything there is to see if you had a solid month. If this is the only chance you'll have to visit, you will likely regret not taking at least a couple days to see at least the main monuments, the Capitol, and some of the Smithsonian -- one could easily spend weeks going through that place.

My son is in the Air Force and now at the Pentagon. He lives in Pentagon City area of Arlington VA. He took a drive through there on the weekend and said he definately would not park his car there but ride the Metro from near his apartment.

I would say park and take one of the many available tour bus options. Years ago we did one that went around after dark and showed you all of the highlights, lit up. Was pretty cool. Stopped at all of the major points and let you out for pictures, too.
