Ordered an SG from Sweetwater last week. A Gibson Custom '63 SG Reissue Lightening Bar VOS. Never thought I'd buy a guitar with the 'worn' look but, I wanted an SG with spec'd P90's to the period. They claim this is it. I'm even having it Plek'd like my LP is. When they get to doing this, I'll finally have it sent to me. They are backed up with requests for this procedure. Something they don't reveal when you are ordering. Had I know this, I would have still ordered. I would have just paid a different way. As it is, it's paid for and Sweetwater has my money. I think I'll get this guitar next week sometime but, there's no guarantee. I'll put up pics when I get it.

Aren't the Customs Plek'd at Gibson already?
My '16 HPs were both factory Pleks.

I'm told by my sales rep, that Gibson does do the plek on their custom shop guitars but, how they do it is different. It's a basic plek where Gibson will set up to plek one guitar in the particular model they are doing the procedure on and then use the same setting for each same model based on the first one. A 'production pleking' if you will. Sweetwater on the other hand, goes beyond the basic pleking. What that extra is in part, has to do with customer preference for one plus some other extras they do. Not sure what that may be but, this is what I'm told, in a nut shell.

Yea, makes sense.
I'm very happy with my basic ones, the two play identically (sound different), but the feel is 100% and I'm dead alright with that.
I haven't had to adjust the setup at all in almost seven years now!

I bought a LP Studio from SW and it came plekked. Standards come plekked too. Seems a Custom should also. Anyway, nice guitar!

It's funny that an option like that exist that's so precise and tailored to your preference. Before, a good set up was enough. Sweetwater has four or five different choices for the plek setup with a price range up to 300 bucks for the ultimate(?) set up. It's an added 'feature' when you are ordering it seems.

I wanted Gibson P90's. I got period correct Gibson P90's. I didn't know what to expect in these and now I know. Gibson knows P90's. Never thought I'd have them in an SG. Not my favorite look, the SG. I change my mind...a bit. This guitar is feather light. 6lbs 3oz. and maybe a good platform for these P90's. Before it comes up, I'm not an expert in P90's but, I do have another guitar with them. They are not Gibson P 90's. PRS made them. Not even close to the Gibson ones in this SG. These Gibson's have a unique growl to them on the clean side that must be one of the sounds others like about these. For amplifier(s), I pulled out the '59 Bassman LTD reissue to sort of stay with the theme of nostalgia along with the Magnatone Panoramic stereo amp. I think the P90's were made for these two amps. I think these pickups through the Magnatone sound even a bit better than the Bassman although it works outstanding with these p ups. I'm completely happy with this guitar [as if you couldn't tell ]. I'll also mention that what ever quality issues Gibson has or had is not present in this guitar. It also has a one piece Mahogany neck and body and you can barely tell they are separate pieces. I looks virtually, like one piece. Also, did I mention how light it is?

Nice looking guitar LVF! P90’s paired with an SG sounds like a winning combo. 👍

I love P90 SG specials, but I wish Gibson would make one without a slim-taper neck:(

Sweet git! I can only imagine how awesome it sounds through that Bassman. And ditto the Gibson P90 thing. I have a 2012(?) LP '50s Trib with them and it is a rawk machine - and more if desired. It's nice because it also has a meaty neck. IMO what makes the Gibson P90s a thing unto themselves goes beyond the pickups - which are obviously the heart of the equation. It's also the 300k volume pots and the Gibson scale. But - after some builds and mods I've found that a decent set of AlNiCo P90s coupled with a 300k volume pot (even 250k in a pinch) yield that snarl. I've found this with both the StewMac and Tonerider P90s. Even on a Fender-scale instrument. This is the guitar I enter into evidence:
It's a SX what-ever-the-model-is. I bought it cheap because the original neck had a wicked back-bow. So I slapped a WD neck on the body and upgraded to Tonerider P90s - with 300k volume and 500k tone pots. This guitar does the Gibson P90 snarl very well. Especially the bridge P90.

Those are some nice Axes right there, Leftee. The SG sounds great through both the Bassman and the Magnatone. I was just thinking I have quite the collection of '50's and '60's era gear. Maybe worthy of a different thread. Hmm...

That is no issue with me, Leftee. A good reveal of anybody's stuff is what this place is all about.

Here's my P90 go-to. It's a 2005 (pre-lawsuit) Agile 2500. It was supposed to be a Goldtop but had a puke-green hue when it arrived. As Eric has heard many times, my daughter took one look at it and said, "Dad, it's snot green." I was gonna send it back but it played so well, I decided to keep it and named it 'Ol' Snotty'.
I later installed Lollar pickups and this one is my rawk machine. The color has mellowed with age and it's not as greenish-yellow.

So with that guitar, you're ready to join the Dead Boys touring ensemble?
Old, Loud, and Snotty?

Re: the green gold tops
The originals use copper(?) powder as the metallic component. The copper oxidized, turning green.
I think Agile was trying to capture that look.

I wished my 2016 Gibson SG Standard had the width neck as your LP has. I would have kept it then. I sold it when I decided to get the Sire H7.

I love P90 SG specials, but I wish Gibson would make one without a slim-taper neck:( Same here! The Slim Taper was the very reason I just sold my 2016 Gibson SG Standard. It was a good guitar otherwise. The Gibson Plek’ing was great on it, sounded great but just couldn’t bond with the neck.
