I need one for my rod building business. I don't want anything that's going to take up half my work bench. My need is a 1", but I'd like to be versatile. I've seen mini belt sanders and those are fine. It's main purpose will be to prep guide feet and to shape cork grips.

My preference would be to find an old, MIA Delta, Craftsman or Walker-Turner made during the last century. Those things are nearly indestructible and you can usually find spare parts for them (especially the Deltas) because they were made, nearly unchanged, for so many years and in such large numbers. Often, they may just need to be cleaned/freshened up, lubricated or at worst given a new bearing or two to be made fully functional. Sometimes they can be had for nothing more than the effort it takes to haul them away: check your local CL. All of my stationary shop tools (band saw, drill press, table saw, jig saw, lathe, etc.) are of this ilk and are at least 50 years old. If you do decide to go this route, there is a deep well of good information on these machine here: owwm.org/Of course, since this is for a business, you may want something that is ready to go from jump and won't require any TLC before it's ready for action. Then again, the quality of the newer stuff seems to be all over the map (especially the case with HF&S stuff), so if you buy new, do your homework on the specific piece of equipment you select before you buy. Some of it suffers from design/quality flaws that range from mildly annoying to utterly infuriating. There are lots of You Tube video reviews of this sort of equipment. Personally, I shy away from MIC stuff, partly because the ChiCom government or PLA seems to own a piece of any business in China that makes noticeable money and also because I don't care to support their practice of totally ignoring U.S. patent laws.

I did some checking and there's a Harbor Freight in Benton (30 minutes from me).

I like that a lot, but a bit more than I'd prefer to pay. This isn't something that's a real necessity, more of luxury, but if I can get something for $50-$75, I'll be a player. Harbor Freight has a Central Machinery unit for $60.00, but none of the stores close to me have it in stock and it's an in store buy only. Figures...lol

I have a Delta SA180 which is a 1"x42" belt with an 8" disc sander. I went online to look it up and was surprised to learn that it has been discontinued. The closest I found was this which is pretty much the same thing.
But I'm thinking this is more than you are looking for.
I keep mine set up on a rolling cabinet and use it all the time -- a very handy machine.

I could never justify $600 for my purposes. But, it looks nice.

I could never justify $600 for my purposes. But, it looks nice. I don't recall what I paid for the Delta -- $200 tops -- maybe. Certainly not $600. You could almost put together one of the 2" x 72" grinder kits for that kind of cash.
Looks like power tool prices have gone through the roof along with everything else.
