Miffed over bad grades given them by their 66 year old Spanish teacher, two Iowa teens beat her to death with a baseball bat, then hid her body and destroyed evidence of the crime. In the old days, a kid with a bad report card might hide it from his parents or even attempt to forge a better grade, but dios mia, the times have changed. Tried as adults, the 16 year olds were sentenced to 30 years and 25 years respectively, with the possibility of parole, so it looks like they'll have plenty of time to polish their Spanish language skills in prison. Apparently Spanish is not the only thing they failed to learn.

Old news. This happened quite awhile ago, just wrapping up the trial and sentencing now. Unspeakable horror. Honestly, someone that could do that shouldn't be released or get parole. They are too sick to be walking the streets ever.

I'd be curious to know what kind of prescription meds these two were/are on.

The numbers you quoted are the prosecution's recommendation.

I can tell you there are a lot of kids who have heard 100x more about the importance of their grades than actual learning. By the time these kids get into college, they are grade-grubbing, extra-credit demanding, grades uber alles pains in my ass.
Then they get a job and none of that matters, and their real world toolbox of skills, knowledge, social skill, self awareness, humility and hard work is “not as good as their precious GPA would lead one to believe.”

Great observation Steve. And well-stated.
