i run my amp on 7 and use a tube screamer. If i turn the output up so it pushes the pre amp tubes does this also push the power tubes thus wearing them out quicker? thks

Yes, which is a good thing. Overdriving the reverb channel of a 2 channel black panel Fender sounds horrid. That’s probably why a change or 2 were made to the reverb driver stage when 70s silver panel models were fitted with a type 4 master volume (a type 4 master volume is between the preamp and power amp).
You might like a type 2 / LarMar master volume. That’s inserted in the power amp, between the phase splitter and output valves. Turning that down allows the preamp to overdrive the phase splitter, which sounds fine, and saves wear on the output valves.
But if you’re going to play a bit quieter, you may as well get a decent pedal and leave well alone with the amp.

That’s due to the heavy overdrive at the output valve grids masking the nasty. As per above, if you fit a type 4 master volume and turn it down, the nasty tone from the preamp overdrive is readily apparent
