Just picked up a 1976 tube driven reverb to go with a 5E3x2 Deluxe, also in Black tolex and silver grill cloth (kind of of completes the rig)
Pedals have come a long way... plenty of pedals now do what this thing does. In fact I'd say some pedals are Hi-fi compared to this...
That said, this has a wonderful low fi depth, being all natural and all.
Also have a late 60s FR1000 solid state reverbs unit. As far as standard reverb that does a pretty good job too.
Anyone else use reverb units?

I did until I got a Boss FRV-1 Fender-branded fake tank/pedal. It doesn't do the crash if you hit it, but i was loathe to do that on a tube unit anyway.
It's stupid, stupid good and does everything I want out of an outboard "tank" with none of the space takeup or tube hassles, and it fits on my pedalboard.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Lexicon rack stuff for...Lexicon stuff, and Eventide stuff for fancy insane, but for basic "want reverb" the tanks (and the FRV-1) are a definite go-to.

No longer but I've been through 2 Reverberates. They were very nice, I just didn't have room for them, they are pretty big. Do I miss them? Yep. That's why I bought a 2nd unit but I just couldn't fit everything together it was so big. Now I use a TRex Time Bug Reverb pedal.

I'm probably in the minority here but I have never liked guitar amp spring reverbs. That drippy-boingy sound just never appealed to me. I like the sound of a studio-level spring reverb and digital reverbs are great. I have never been one to use reverb on an amp in a live situation. If I needed ambience, delays worked much better and didn't wash out the sound of the guitar.

I'm not partial to amp reverb, but the tank reverb is its own creature!

I have a vintage ‘63 and a ‘63RI hand wired and converted to 6K6. Both are paired with vintage brown face amps. I guess I’m old school enough to love spring reverb. The best sounding on-board spring reverb in my possession is in my Vicky Sovereign V1 head. I’ve read that the 6BM8 reverb driver has stability issues but I’ve always used tube dampers and never had a problem.

I’ve read that the 6BM8 reverb driver has stability issues but I’ve always used tube dampers and never had a problem. I'm right there with ya. I describe myself as guitar tone anachronistic! Low fi feeds the fixation. Tube driven spring reverb units produce a warm in depth reverb... smooth old school tonality. Digital reverb has arrived, but IMHO it's like comparing a vinyl record to a CD. I love to chase old schools tones... some of getting there is done on the cheap, I'll admit ... I'm not as smart as the next guy it happened one day ... trying to figure out what to do a set of 64 pure vintage telecaster pups. Way too Bright, Way too Thin sounding... I pondered "Why would Fender re-issue these?" these are not all that stellar.... Staring at a pack GHS Boomers it hit me... In 1964 they didn't have steel core strings, so if the winding of these pups are legit, and if these truly are a re-issue... The pup windings were designed for nickel strings ... So a Nickel set was installed... and a major "ah ha!" moment happened! Celluloid picks came next, using any and all RCA preamp tubes I could afford etc ...when the market ran dry or got priced out of my league The "what new preamp tubes sound close to RCA 7025's and 12ax7s. quest happened (still ongoing but I have a few favorite) .. thing is I'm not trying to sound the best that I can... I try to sound as vintage as I can. I grew up listening to 2 & 4 track 60s recordings on AM and early FM radio... I try to mimic those tones. I currently have a passion for 40s Swing and am really getting inspired by horn players of that era. Recordings (audio in general) from those 3 decades i.e 40s, 50s and 60's got that analog warmth that I like. yea I know I'm weird (it's my little sand box that keeps me playing)

I love my Boss FRV-1 too. Difficult to tell apart from my Fender combo verbs, and more adjustable too. Too bad they discontinued them. Looks like used they are north of $100. But nothing beats my Princeton Reverb with a little trem engaged. Heavenly.

I'm not partial to amp reverb, but the tank reverb is its own creature! Absolutely! The difference in voicing between Fender outboard reverbs and black face amps is stark! Most people will be shocked at how dark and long a DR spring reverb sounds compared to the brash and aggressively bright a 6G15. For my tastes my MXR M300 reverb pedal gets me close enough to both with a turn of the tone and decay knobs. Also remember that the outboard reverbs in front of a cranked amp meant the reverb is getting distorted and compressed too. I mean Dick Dale's tone was never clean, right? IMHO, a really good surf rock sounds needs that reverb to get crunched.

I have to have at least a little Reverb. I have heard the 63 Reverb units are really nice! Besides amp's reverb I use an Electroharmonix Holy Grail nano reverb. The TC Electronics Reverb pedal is really nice sounding but for some reason when I tried them a few years ago they worked fine with battery but after connecting to a 1 spot wall wort 2 of them stopped working. I verified 9vdc with center negative just like the pedal so I never tried them again. All my other pedals at the time had no issue. It was really weird.
I too found on my Gibson SG Standard D'Addario Pure Nickel wound on steel core had that "Yesteryear tone" I was looking for. They were magical sounding.
For some reason when I tried GHS Pure Nickel's on the Sire H7 they didn't set well so I went back to the Ernie Ball Nickel Plated 2221's it came with and the tone returned.
