I have always been primarily an economy picker when playing lead guitar. This has to do more with when moving from one string to another than single string-type stuff. Over the last couple years I have been working on improving my alternate picking because there are some advantages to being able to do it in particular situations. All the old school teachers insist you learn to alternate pick as your base technique but economy picking always felt more natural to me and I can do it quite well. Mostly when moving from low strings to higher ones. I always had trouble moving across the strings in the opposite direction, and still do. I can't recall ever hearing a proper guitar teacher talk about economy picking other than sweeping. To me, it is a very viable technique and I don't understand why it isn't taught much.
After working on alternate picking a lot over the last couple years I am getting to where I can do it decently but still struggle with it. I'm going to keep at it but I have decided that it would be a huge advantage to be able to master both approaches when using a pick. I have been writing exercises that go back and forth between the 2 techniques. It's beginning to gel but OMG it is hard to do. Frank Gambale is the man when it comes to being able to do both very well although his trademark is sweep and economy picking.
How does everyone here do it? One or the other, or both?

Alternate is the way to go early on since it helps tremendously with timing, and if a phrase feels "wrong" then try starting it with an upstroke instead of a down stroke or vice-versa.
I'm a hybrid picker because sometimes I want that pop on the strings or do some Billy Gibbons Cheap Sunglasses style. I also do octaves when we're into a more jazz mode. Sometimes I use no pick.
I guess the answer is, learn them all. Use what works for the song. Why do you have to pick only one style?
