I don't understand that whole industry, but can't help but sense it's just high society "hammering" a money laundering operation, lol.

I'm not a fan of the whole avant-garde art scene. There's nothing there that appeals to me.

There's a lot of art that is supremely beautiful to me. Even so, I don't understand people paying millions for something like that unless they're really confident it will appreciate enough to offset the risk.
A lot of art that is highly valued and lauded looks literally no different from something that anyone could produce. The ones that really astound me are the ones with a half dozen shapes (triangles, squares, circles etc) of different colors on a canvas. Anyone could create something like that, but this particular one is somehow worth millions. Or one with just a bunch of paint splatters....I do it, it's garbage. Someone else does it...auctioned off for 10.2 million.
I think there's a huge "emperor's new close" effect for a lot of that stuff. Someone comes up with some fancy explanation about how it represents man's fight for survival in our brutally cruel society and, because they're an "expert", others stand there and go "yeah, that's really incredible" as they pull out their checkbook and pen. I have seen a lot of things purchased where I can't help but think "There's a guy with more money than brains".
I'm a big fan of the impressionist era and my house is full of impressionist works...all done by local artists and nothing I paid more than a couple hundred bucks for. Famous and valuable? Nope. Pleasing to my eye? Absolutely.
As far as money laundering, my son showed me an article talking about stuff like that. Apparently buyers and experts will work together to manipulate the market so facilitate huge tax breaks...buy low, jack up value, donate for a huge tax break.

My late father was a helluva artist, his favorites were Van Gogh and Picasso. I grew up surrounded by art and was involved in it until my retirement. But when I was a kid I said something like 'anyone could paint that' and he laughed. It didn't take me too much longer to understand how silly that statement was. Granted beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but saying that is something anyone could paint is as ignorant as a kid's opinion, no offense if you feel that way and you can like what you like but w all due respect you don't know what you're talking about. Carry on.....

I remember watching a show where "art aficionados" were unknowingly fawning over pieces done by children. Not an indictment of art appreciation but certainly there are a few posers in the biz who can't discern between a Picasso and a nose picker😆

My ex-wife was a distant cousin of Andy Warhol (Warhola actually), and we went to an exhibit at the Warhol museum in Pittsburgh once.
The only memorable "piece" was a bedroom set (like something out of a furniture store) with a black and white TV about where a person would be sleeping.
The TV showed random scenes of nature with quick cuts of war (to simulate nightmares or something).
The rest of the "Modern Art" was pure garbage in my opinion.

saying that is something anyone could paint is as ignorant as a kid's opinion Maybe you're right. A kid with any sensibility wouldn't paint something so psychotic. lol!

I say that this sort of art doesn’t do anything for me, but when I look at some of the guitars I build I feel like a hypocrite. 😂

"Conceptual Art" is the worst, IMHO. What a hustle.
Yoko Ono was a big proponent...which should tell you something...

Maybe 10-15 yrs ago my family visited the Museum Of Modern Art in San Francisco. Two exhibits of note -- a 3-panel canvas painted solid white, and a truncated pyramidal stack of well-worn Levis jeans (maybe 10'x10' at the base and about 2-3' tall). I've read that a later artist in Denmark received $84,000 in advance to produce work for a Denmark MOMA. His returned work was two blank white canvases titled "Take the Money and Run."

In early 1980’s Mrs. LTB and I went to the Kimble Art Musium in Fort Worth to see the Picasso exibit. We hated it! The only Art it rivaled was Hunter B.’s 😂🤣😂🤣

Picasso did some pretty cool stuff.
He also churned out some crap.
The painting in question falls into the latter category, IMHO.

When I was a senior in HS, we had an assignment in Humanities class to write about The Scream by Edvard Munch. We were supposed to write about the societal commentary it was reflecting at the time the artist painted it. I misunderstood and wrote about Munch focusing on the psychotic and negativism versus looking at the good and positive things in life. When I received back my paper, it had a D+. The teacher’s comments said, “You completely missed the point of the assignment, but you have strong ideals. Hang onto those ideals and you’ll do well in life.” So I got that going for me, which is nice. lol!

No, you can't paint like Picasso. Funny how a group of musicians have the same take on art as the general population.

On the other hand, just because a visual artist's portfolio contains some masterpieces, that doesn't mean that everything he does rises to the level of greatness. Nobody bats 1000. Just as there are "filler" tracks on many great band's albums, every visual artist's portfolio includes some clunkers.

That's reasonable Taildragger. My thinking is musicians as creative people ought to be able to see some application of what they do in other art forms.
