This has nothing to do with his abrasive personality or his political views: I've felt this way about his music ever since I first heard it (back around the time this recording was made) and long before I knew anything about his personal views or attitudes. Over the years, I've periodically tried to give it a "fresh listen", but each time have had the same reaction: what he does has just always struck me me as being distinctly "unmusical":
Is there an artist or band about which you feel this way?
Feel free to link to an illustrative video.

Bruce Springsteen. Never got it. Weak songs, he talks more than he sings.

I just don't want to slag on anyone else's favorites. I hear ya. Nice thought but, hopefully, we're all grown up enough here to realize that nobody's trying to slam anybody else personally here and that peoples' reactions to any given artist or band are bound to vary from individual to individual. Add to that that our feelings about many pieces of music, especially the older stuff, may be colored as much by personal, nostalgic associations connected to what was going on in our lives when we first heard them as they are a result of relatively objective, aesthetic considerations. Thank goodness we don't all think in lock step, sez I!

Admittedly I haven't listened to a lot of his music and can certainly appreciate his guitar mastery, but what I have heard of Pat Metheny sounded like an arcade game. It ain't the note selection, but the tone.

Ted Nugent??? Thems fighting words. I wore out in 8 track of Double Live Gonzo in high school. Great White Buffalo live is a great song.

When Detroit AM radio wedged Journey to the Center of the Mind in between all the top 40 stuff I thought it was just too cool. Back in the late 70s/early 80s the band I was in was managed by Ted's long time road manager. We got back stage passes at a show in Flint and pretty much all I recall was volume, bare chest, a swinging rope and bow & arrow, lol. I did kinda like his remake of Little Red Book.

Back in that time I never quite got Janis Joplin. I always thought that Lydia Pense with the band Cold Blood was much better. Lydia is still with us and still performing with Cold Blood.

Fair enough. You'd probably pass on some of the stuff that constituted the "anthems of my youth" as well.

David Bowie?
meh...
Always just seemed to me to be mostly a guy playing dress up.
Must've been something else going on there, but I wasn't able to detect it.

Way back in the day…
When I was in HS in the ‘70s there were 3 major acts that I really didn’t get.
ELO Fleetwood Mac (Rumors) Peter Frampton
It was a time and place thing for sure.
These days it’s the canned pop with gratuitous Autotune.

The entire genre of “new” country. All that crap is just pop with a twang.

[/quote] lol! You might be surprised. I liked a wide variety of stuff back then and still do. The Nuge lost me after his fame went to his head and he became a caricature of himself. My list would include: Janis Joplin Mick Jagger Madonna Eddie Vedder Kiss While I understand why Jeff Beck was popular, he never did a thing for me even though I tried numerous times.

Velvet Underground.
Feels very "Emperor's new clothes" to me. Ask people why it is good, and you get a lot of name dropping and fart sniffing. Especially anything involving Nico... I'll hear the story about how she was actually a model and sang on the album, blah blah blah... but it doesn't matter because she's an awful singer! Someone makes me listen to her version of These Days at least a couple times a month.

While I understand why Jeff Beck was popular, he never did a thing for me even though I tried numerous times. Music where the skill of the performer is the sole attraction is great, but doesn't me back for repeat listening. That's kinda where Jeff Beck is for me. In an alternate universe he'd have been part of some prog-group with other creative people where those great guitar solos could be in a different context, and I wouldn't be able to get enough. But, as it is, the only interesting thing about his music is his guitar playing, and it just isn't enough.

Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to mind. I know they are many people's anthem band but I never did get them. I'm a guitar player and I thought they had too many. None of them were very inspiring to me.

I'm with you there. Add to that anything else Lou Reed ever did. I guess it might have been easier for a person who spent their formative years in NYC to "get" all that. I was on the opposite coast, locked in on Dick Dale and the Delltones and the like. While I understand why Jeff Beck was popular, he never did a thing for me even though I tried numerous times. Love "early" Jeff Beck, say, up through the "Blow by Blow" and "Wired" albums, but only sporadic bits thereafter. He was one of the least derivative "guitar gods" to come out of the mid/late 1960s, so I admire the originality of his approach throughout. Plus, hey: he was a "car guy"!

Skynyrd is like comfort food.... simple, palatable, easy to digest, you can eat it every Thursday and not get tired of it. You probably won't order it in a restaurant, though.

I'll make the broad and stereotypical geezer statement of all artists contained within the rap/hip-hop genre. I just don't get it. To me there's no discerning element between the delivery. It's funny and predictable how internet discussions most often turn to such statements as "I think there is a dark side to your dislike", which is the typical toss of tear gas to disburse the crowd. I grew up living in and listening to Motown. I still love so much of the music. Same with old blues and jazz. There isn't a dark side. For me it's cacophony. And the messages/lyrics? No different than people who may acknowledge Dylan as a poet but cannot stand his voice. I just can't invest the time to "understand it".
I once was certain the genre was a passing thing, maybe my worst prediction ever. I "accept" the fact that there is something about it that makes it endure. Some people can't stand classical music yet it endures. We like what we like and more often than not won't invest the time to cultivate a taste for something.
