As I have discussed, my daughter just started high school and was accepted into the school’s Performing Arts Academy.
They held auditions on the SECOND DAY of school for both a fall play (The Man Who Came To Dinner) and the Spring musical (Shrek).
The Spring musical will not be cast until later, but the cast list came out and she landed a lead part. A part played by Bette Davis in the 1942 movie version. I don’t know the movie (or the play) and I don’t know how big a part it is, but getting a part like that as a freshman is very cool for her, especially since she is usually more musical theater inclined rather than acting.
As I have mentioned, she has been singing and acting since age 4 and she just keeps getting better. Proud of her.

😎♥️ These are the parenting rewards. I suppose so. I take credit for her love of music, I played guitar with her in the room from the time she was a baby, and we have always listened to music together. But the acting bug, neither my wife or I ever had that, she’s more outgoing than either of us ever was. My stock abswer when people ask “where did she come from” is “I don’t know, probably the mailman”, to my wife’s eye rolling dismay.

Parenting well involves hard work and subordinating your personal priorities to do for another: you've earned the right to brag

My son is a gifted mathematician, with a Master's degree and a very well-paid job in London as a modeller. But, as his father, I'm allowed to point out that I still doubt if he could find his backside with both hands in the dark.

Congrats to your daughter and to her parents who seem to be doing a fine job.
The Bette Davis part is "The Man's" personal assistant. It's an important part.

Congrats on having an intelligent, accomplished child.
And good on you for loving her mother and being a dad to her.

Nothing wrong about being proud of your child's accomplishments and voicing it. Nice to read about positive news. Congrats!

Thanks guys. We’re definitely worried about her attending a new school. Her junior high was located right behind her elementary school. So it’s the first time she has gone to a new school with kids she doesn’t know since kindergarten. She is fitting in fine, found both theater friends (which we knew would happen) and also some non-theater ones pretty early in the process.
Good to see that she hit the ground running.

Love posting about this stuff.
The play was this weekend, and she killed her part, which was pretty big all things considered. Only 17 kids got roles, and only 3 freshmen. The other two played much smaller, less interesting parts.
It was her first time in a non-musical play, and she remembered all of her lines, and she was funny. During one scene, “ The Man” removes his tie and gifts it to someone. Well, on the second night, it got stuck on his microphone wire and he couldn’t get it off. So, he improvised “I suppose I’ll just give it to you later”, which got good laughs. The tie was left draped over one of his shoulders. My daughter finished her lines, and as she was exiting, says “Oh, and by the way, you should fix your tie, it’s a little crooked”, and walked off to huge laughs. Someone else made a reference to her line later on, and more laughs. She was definitely able to hold her own, for the most part with kids older than she.
Her next assignment in class is to create her own character. She picked my very Brooklyn Italian mother in law as her inspiration. We told her to practice it, but she quite correctly pointed out, she has been preparing that role her whole life, as doing imitations of my mother in law is something we all do all the time.
One of her friends in the class has chosen HER as the inspiration for her character study. So clearly, based on all of the above, she’s making an impact!

That's cool, sounds like she is having fun and enjoying it. Are you allowed to record her plays or is it restricted?

Often the organization hosting it (in this case, the school) has it recorded and makes it available for sale. We usually buy it if it’s made available since it’s to raise funds for the program. I did not notice if these shows were being recorded.

Sounds like fun. I have great kids that are all productive members of society. My youngest is graduating with an engineering degree in December and already has 5 job offers which is a highlight for us.
That being said, none of my kids have done the stereotypical brag-worthy stuff. No starring roles in the plays, no starter on for a varsity sport much less the star of the team. No valedictorian, etc.
I consider them successful, but none have provided that "That's my kid" brag worthy moment (and I'm OK with that).

We knew she'd nail it.
She can think of all of us as her wacky uncles -- we can brag on her too.

We knew she'd nail it. She can think of all of us as her wacky uncles -- we can brag on her too. Thank you! Truthfully, I did know she would nail it, she's been doing that pretty consistently since age 4. I don't know how she does it, nor where it came from. I was in a band and played on stages to crowds equal to or bigger than she does, but I don't feel like that takes the same putting yourself "out there" as theater does. Next comes a small part in Into The Woods, then two separate Christmas shows, followed by Shrek the Musical in the Spring.

A very entertaining play. I have enjoyed watching high school plays. A very fun show. She actually did it over the summer, she was in the ensemble but also played the Dragon one night. It’s a small part but comes with a solo song, which she was very excited about. They made the Dragon appear bigger by seating her on the shoulders of one of the directors, dressed in all black. The other girl who played the role was nearly a foot shorter and significantly lighter than my daughter, but he did it anyway. Don’t tell her I posted this, but if anyone is curious: flic.kr/p/2mEnqy4The part she really wanted (knowing the older kids would get all of the big parts, per usual) was Pinocchio. She auditioned for it on the second day of school, one of the songs you could choose to audition with was her solo from the summer, so she did. She was cast as Pinocchio. Also a smaller part, only in the beginning and end, but has a good singing part and a fair amount of dialogue in the beginning.

One of my elder brothers got into theater in high school. The theater arts teacher was a renowned Broadway producer who regularly turned down offers to return. He liked teaching. The plays were great. In fact my brother has been a union stage hand most of his working life. Over 30 years on Broadway. So in answer to a previous thread teaching is a big deal career. All my kids completed degrees, all with honors. All are productive self-supporting citizens. Make and old dog proud. Ain't it great?!

They are, and it happens that her school has an excellent drama teacher, from whom she has been taking a class on Saturdays for years. So that makes them an even better caliber.

Today, one of the kids from her Saturday theater program ("kid" being a relative term, he's a sophomore at Fordham University) let them all know that a musical he wrote has been picked to play in a theater festival in Manhattan for five nights in the Spring.
It was shortly followed with a text message to my daughter asking if she would be willing to play the lead role in it.
I don't know what the commitment is or how it will match up with her school obligations, but I can guarantee she's willing.
