As I have discussed, my daughter just started high school and was accepted into the school’s Performing Arts Academy. They held auditions on the SECOND DAY of school for both a fall play (The Man Who Came To Dinner) and the Spring musical (Shrek). The Spring musical will not be cast until later, but the cast list came out and she landed a lead part. A part played by Bette Davis in the 1942 movie version. I don’t know the movie (or the play) and I don’t know how big a part it is, but getting a part like that as a freshman is very cool for her, especially since she is usually more musical theater inclined rather than acting. As I have mentioned, she has been singing and acting since age 4 and she just keeps getting better. Proud of her. Very cool Mike. Hoping she does well!

Congrats to your daughter and to her parents who seem to be doing a fine job. The Bette Davis part is "The Man's" personal assistant. It's an important part. You weren’t kidding, tons of stage time and dialogue. You could argue that part is the best female part in the show! She handled it well, even throwing in some improv when there was a prop mishap on stage. Very proud of her. Now it’s time for the Christmas shoes, and then on to Shrek in the Spring. There is a local organization that gives out awards for high school theater (basically the Tony awards of Staten Island HS Theater), and while she knows it would be very uncommon for a Freshman to be nominated, she’s still hoping.

Figured I would throw out an update, there’s a local organization that runs a lm awards show, kind of like the Tony Awards for the Staten Island Catholic school system. Three levels of actor awards are given, Best Actor/Actress, Supporting Actor/Actress, or Featured Actor/Actress.
Nobody I have spoken to (and it’s a lot of people) has ever heard of a freshman being nominated. Until today.
She’s been nominated for Best Featured Actress for playing Pinocchio in Shrek. Nominated against another girl from her school, who is a senior, and a bunch of people I don’t know. M
Not expecting a win, but as they say, it’s an honor just to be nominated.

Thanks guys.
The entire program at her school did very well, they’ve got nominees in every category, and are doubled up on some of them.
The awards show is June 5, we already had our tickets because regardless of nominations each school was performing. But now we have something else to root for.

I missed this one, late to the party.
Very nice Mike.
These activities are helpful to a young person ... IMO.
Coming from a very small school I was able to be involved in about anything I wanted to be involved in.
The great part for your Daughter is, SHE HAS TALENT!
I never had any talent, but I learned that these things help us grow.
Congratulations to all!

I never had any talent, but I learned that these things help us grow. Congratulations to all! Thank you! Have to be honest, having a kid who does theater is very time consuming. Especially if they do a lot of theater. There was a point that she was rehearsing for four separate shows, one has finished and the other three are still going. But even though it takes up so much of her time, I find it beneficial in a few ways, and it certainly keeps her out of trouble. And theater kids are some of the nicest kids around too, so it’s like a “family” type atmosphere. She does have talent, and where it comes from is anyone’s guess. She has always loved music and singing, her favorite toy as a kid was a handheld mp3 karaoke machine with a microphone attached to it. Neither my wife or I can sing at all, and the closest I came was being a hack guitarist in a hack band in the 90’s. I don’t believe that it’ll be what she does in life, and I don’t think that’s what she is looking for either, it I hope she keeps doing it in college, in community theater, and beyond.

Congrats to your daughter! I have a niece who was good at performing arts (singing/acting) in school. In college she's gotten into the production side of things, and has an internship doing production work for Saturday Night Live on her resume. Not bad, huh?

Where the talent comes from? We're all products of nature and nurture. She was nurtured well, having a loving dad and a loving mom. That, and you're being modest.

I do take credit for her love of music, because I was WAY into playing back when she was born. When my wife and sister would “take turns” so we each could get some sleep, it was frequent that she’d park herself in my open guitar case to listen. Her first concert was Billy Joel, most 10 year olds at that time probably had no idea who he was. That definitely comes from being around us and also from us not playing “kids music” all the time, though there was some of course. Even then, she gravitated toward actual people making music as opposed to purple dinosaurs and such.
Maybe some says I was more entertaining than others.

She was already a Monkees fan, along with the Beatles and Beach Boys. A few years later I had tickets for us to see the Beach Boys, but that show was cancelled.

Tonight is the big awards show. Dropped her off for the rehearsal and learned that there are pre-award award that each school does, voted on by the cast. They’re all offbeat kind of topics, not “best actor” and so forth.
Little Fitz was awarded “Best Character Voice.”
So whether she wins the big award or not, at least she won something!

Unfortunately, she did not win her individual category. But, the school won best chorus, best choreography, best production number (which had one of her solos in it) and the big prize, best musical which comes with a $5,000 donation to the schools’s theater department for next year. Two of her friends won individual awards.
6 awards total for the school broke the previous record, so that’s pretty cool.

Thank you, we’ve reinforced that with her but she was on the right page already.
She was recognized by her school in their annual awards night, she won the award for her dance program (and English, incidentally). These are not “everyone gets an award” awards, there were two in each section, she got the highest one in her section.
After a long time of being in ensembles and not being recognized for what she does, she feels pretty good.
She had taken dance classes at a local school but fell out of favor with some of the girls there, and really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. They have a musical theater class run by her formal vocal coach. The coach was up for an acting job and the recital was today, and there was a chance she might have to miss the recital. So, they called my daughter and asked if she could step in, learn the routine, and assist at the recital. In less than a week.
She wound up not being needed, but when the dancing school is full of dancers her age, and they still called her as a non-student to be the one to do it, that says something if you ask me.

My son is a gifted mathematician, with a Master's degree and a very well-paid job in London as a modeller. But, as his father, I'm allowed to point out that I still doubt if he could find his backside with both hands in the dark. Well it is typical of extremely smart and gifted persons that they lack common sense.

How many Jeopardy winners have been brain surgeons or rocket scientists? My favorite Jeopardy champs have been ride-share drivers and bartenders.
