It doesn't seem right to call something 34 years old - old... right!?!?
This was delivered today. A 1986 4001 - Studio 15. It needs a good cleaning and the grille cloth changed. I have enough cloth left from other Marshalls I've restored, from this period, to do this one. The grille cloth was always bad on these. It was actually a paper product. Marshall didn't learn until later that it faded so fast and so completely. A previous owner tried to color this one back to back, methinks.
It's all original right down to the tubes. It has EI ECC83s and a pair of dark-glass 6V6s. The amp sounds great! Combos always sound better (IMO) in bigger cabinets. That said, this does very nice Marshall tone.

I had a bandmate years ago that had one of those. If I remember correctly it was pretty loud for it's size.
He ran some kind of multi fx unit so I can't really comment on the tone.

I will say this. The speaker is totally broken in. 😂
It’s not really what you’d expect from a JCM800. It’s not as gainy as the rest of the lineup.
I’m really diggin’ it.

Very nice. Didn't know Marshall ever used 6v6's. Is it a 10 or 12 inch speaker?

Holy Cow ! Now we need a Phd to reply.
I never heard of a Marshall using 6v6s either !
That might be interesting.
The guitar in the background is rather interesting as well.
A Communist Stratotele ? Whatever it is, it's Gorgeous.
What pickups are in there ?

Very cool! You can see where a previous owner removed the speaker grill and colored it with a fat magic marker, and it has faded. When you re-cover the grill: before you re-install it, lightly pat it down with some baby powder and then brush it off, and it will not look so starkly new in comparison to the rest of the cabinet.

Won’t that give my amp ovarian cancer?!?!?! But seriously. My goal is to clean up the cab. There are some small nicks where the tiles is still there. I’ll glue those down.

Very nice, and I'm glad it arrived safely! My first Mini Jube arrived with a hole in the box and a matching hole in the grill cloth.
That's probably loud enough to gig with.

Thanks all!
The seller did a fantastic job packing. That makes all the difference.
Yeah, one could probably gig with one of these. Not that there’s any of that in my immediate future.

Is it hosted on a photo-hosting site? We can’t upload pics here any more. We ran out of space.

There’s a feature I just remembered (thanks to The History of Marshall book) that is muy sweeto.
This amp has a headphone jack taken from the output of the amp. And you can unplug the speaker and use headphones for silent practice.
But you can also plug the speaker into the headphone jack for an attenuated output. You can dime the amp for cranked tone at low volume. I just tried it and it works well. 😎

Tried posting a pic of my Studio 15. Eventually I'll figure it out. Great amp.

I've got a roll of Salt & Pepper grille cloth. Should I?
I'm thinking yes.

Welp...
I think that, since the original state of the amp has been forever ruined by a previous owner and a magic marker, I'll go with the S&P.

What? No tweed? I’m pretty sure that would create a rip in the time/space continuum.

I like the simplified controls on that amp, which is atypical of many Marshalls.

Welp Pt2... I got the amp apart when I had an idea. You guys know me. I have dye and I ain't afeared to use it. And I figured, worst case, I will change the grille cloth. Best case, the amp stays original - right down to the factory grille cloth. So I decided to dye the original grille. I mixed some black w/alcohol. I had the baffle out of the amp and the logo removed from the grille. I used a paint brush to apply and alternated coats by direction. It dried fast and well. It holds fast.
I gently washed the logo with some dish soap. Just to bring it back a bit.
Back together she went. We'll see if it lasts.

That looks great! For the tolex, I use Armor-All non-gloss and an old toothbrush.

Thanks!
Oddly enough, I have a Lead 20 sitting next to this amp - from the same year. But it is a closet classic. The grille didn’t fade at all on that one. Its grille does look blacker than this amp’s grille. So my attempt wasn’t perfect. But it is much much better.
I got the cab cleaned up a bit. I need to do the armor all next.

Another cool thing about these. The master volume is post-phase inverter.
Way ahead of its time!
