Give it to Josh Scott (JHS Pedals) to scratch that itch that everyone kinda, sorta knew: You can just about duplicate any rare, overpriced overdrive pedal sound with a pretty good overdrive pedal. Suddenly this video has gone viral with used prices more than quadrupling in the last few days.

I saw Bad Monkeys going wild in Reverb today. Absolutely lunacy.

The thing that's missed is the depth of stuff in the Klon or whatever is what makes them useful - for me, there's not really a "bad" range of sounds in one.
The Bad Monkey (and pretty much every TS thing I've tried) doesn't play well with the sounds I want.
Yes you can match A sound if you start tweaking them together, but is it the "sound you want from X" duplicated on Y, or simply "I made Y sound like X on this ONE tiny aspect?"

I'm already out in front of the market. I'll be rich!

The joke is on players too dopey to know that to do with their money. Many of those types railed against Josh for artificially inflating the market price.
Here's what he had to say about that:
---------------------------- From JHS
To the people complaining that I raised the price on this pedal and 'now you can’t buy one,' I would like to remind you you had 19 years to buy one, but you never cared. This pedal has existed four years longer than JHS as a company, and most guitarists have hated on it since day one. No one kept you from trying it in 2004. Learn to listen with your ears and not trends, and you will be a much happier guitarist.
Next: People will list them for ridiculous prices, and it’s extremely easy to not to buy them at those prices. Just wait. They will return to normal, and people will move on to the next thing.
One more thing: people listing for $600 and people buying them for $600 are two very different things. Sit back, relax, and enjoy guitar with what you have. The point of the episode was to help you see that what you have is enough. ----------------------------

I've raised the price on a couple niche rackmounts by mentioning them and championing them for years.
They're STILL underpriced versus what they're worth, and I already had a pair or more of everything before the prices "spiked."
When you can get EVERY damned Boss 70s and 80s era OD/distortion unit with parametric EQ in a single rackmount, analog, MIJ...I still don't know how JHS hasn't figured that out.

I bought two Bad Monkeys back in the day trying to like them but there was a dark quality that I couldn't seem to EQ out. Maybe it was the amps I was using at the time.

You should buy 2 of the $600 offerings and try again. 😂

lol! I'll wait until they reach $1000 so I'll feel completely relevant as a gear snob.

You obviously tried two of the heavy versions.
They're darker, because the weight goes to eleven.

I think I'll sell mine to fund a Prince of Tone. Maybe I can get $148 for it.

KDH had a good response to this.
It is rich in irony. The point is that you don't need to track down some rarity online, so people see the video... and track down some rarity online.
Pedals confuse me. Boutique pedals that don't sound that good, vintage standards that seem only good if you're chasing a certain tone on a certain record, and a bunch of middle of the road pedals that are perfectly fine. Most feel like toys. But, finding ones that don't feel toy like feels hard, and going boutique or collectible has never seemed to make a difference. I rarely enjoy using them, and prefer going right into an amp. They ended up being a necessary evil because no one wants a rock/blues solo with a totally clean tone.
I have felt vindicated before, though. I remember having Marshall Governor and Bluesbreaker pedals at the shop that I thought sounded amazing and no one wanted. My brother had a TS10 for years that he got as a beginner not knowing anything about pedals and it was just what the sales guy recommended, and I always thought it was the best sounding TS I ever heard.... many years later it would become collectible. I have a Crowther Hot Cake that does a hot overdrive ridiculously well, that I found simply by word of mouth and no one had heard of, it is now on a lot of people's top pedals list. Not sure if it fetches big money, though. I was never a fan, but sold a lot of Metal Zones to kids in the early 2000s, not because it was cork-sniffing good, but because I knew it was going to do what they wanted it to do, and do it really well.

Today I saw a BM on reverb for $210. So only 4x the price it should be.
And it will be next week.

Hah! I tried one when they were new, and IMO it sounded digital and "fake"... I didn't like it at all.

I remember (and still use) the Boss HM-2 - not as a Swedish chainsaw (and frankly was mystified why anyone would use that setting) but as a high gain/near fuzzbox that ripped with a Fender 6l6 and the Space Echo preamp.
NOBODY wanted them for AGES.

Imagine if EHX discontinued the Soul Food?

There's a metric ton of the Soul Food out there - same with the Monkey a couple years after they discontinued them.
They have to be unobtainium for ages.
Ahd the Soul Food has long since not been the "new hotness" in Klon stuff for a long, long time - it was the first cheapie, but now there's dozens.

Some of you cats probably remember this...many years ago on the FDP we had a Bad Monkey discussion going. A few of us liked it and used it. The thread was entitled The Recalcitrant Ape, or similar.

I sold 7 pedals recently (including a Soul Food) when I got my Wampler Moxie.. no regrets there, and a check of eBay shows the Bad Monkey is hovering around $149..
So I'd say that the controversy is about over already.
