Whenever I see these threads I imagine an emcee walking around a room with a microphone asking an audience "name a song/artist that you hate" and their responses causing a groan of disapproval from half the room. Then it leading to chairs flipping over a la Jerry Springer, lol. I'm not into tipping sacred cows that much, but it's always fun watching and hard not to join in once in a while. You mean like if someone were to say the Beatles were the world’s first boy band, and then kick back and watch the natives get restless?

Ok, I realized in my defense of "Groove is in the heart" I forgot to nominate the worst song. Can you believe this piece of excrement was #1?

I just reviewed a list of "40 most annoying songs". Some I didn't even recognize, others I don't like but don't make me recoil, a few I actual like. But one made my list.
The Final Countdown.
*in a mocking voice*
"The final count-dyyyyown"
😆
Also when makeup and hair bands try ballads.
Beth-Kiss and Patience-GnR come to mind.

Oooo, the hair metal bands. I can tolerate some of it, but I’m lightening fast on tuner knob if Poison comes on.

If you really want to get the full effect of just how bad Final Countdown can be, feast your ears on this:

I listen to the radio very rarely, but pretty much any of the 3 classic rock band’s songs that are targeted by Corporate rock stations set my teeth on edge. While most of these bands set the soundtracks of my youth, I came of age in the mid 70’s and I miss the deep cuts from the days of AOR programming.

Sweet Caroline. I absolutely hate Sweet Caroline. Another oldie that I used to be able to tolerate from a nostalgia standpoint. Then one day back at our old 55+ community we were conned into going to a Christmas show with some older folks. The band played that song and along came the "never seemed so good" part and the audience launched into the "so good, so good, so good" with hands up in the air. 🥴 Now I apparently missed the live Neil Diamond version and had no clue what was going on. But since that time, yeah...Caroline ain't so sweet to my ears.

Styx, Mr. Roboto. And I just gave myself an earworm.... My daughter is a big fan of music new and old, she listens to the words, the melodies, harmonies, everything. When she was like 8 or so we were I the car and Mr. Roboto came on and I just left it on to see her reaction. I didn’t say a word and she just started laughing. “WHAT??? Is this real???” Yes, someone thought that was a good idea lol.

If it doesn't have to be rock, probably either "People" by Streisand or "Believe" by Cher.
"Believe" is bad enough in and of itself, but I also hate it for what it did to popularize misuse of Auto-Tune.

Anything sung by Steven Tyler. I can't get to the volume knob quick enough.
Take the long way home
It's magic - by Pilot
Everytime the Ozempic commercial starts I scramble to mute it to keep that lovely earworm at bay..

I couldn't stand this song since the 1st time I heard it 5th grade. Surprisingly, and nauseatingly, people play this at their wedding.
Loving You

In fact, I’ll go to the other end of the spectrum with classical music (what I listen to the most now days). If a March comes on, I have to grit my teeth for the next piece. I just don’t like them.

Mine has a backstory. My high school had a very annoying idea to play "music" during breaks between classes. The same loop tape, every day.
And since the "mascot" of said crappy institution was a rocket...yea, I'm sure you can see where this is going.
Several times a day at distortion-inducing school PA volumes with no fidelity...
Before I graduated, we snuck in and changed the tape to
That was a moment to remember.

Loving You My mother, God Bless her, was quite the musician, singer/Comedian, She would imitate Minnie at the top of her lungs (think Carol Burnette) and all the children and pets couldn't leave the room fast enough.

You have my unqualified backing, Vibroluxer and argo.
And my dogs would like to add their votes, as well...
Reaching those high notes is something of a achievement, to be sure.
But that doesn't necessarily mean I want to listen to them.

I came of age in the mid 70’s and I miss the deep cuts from the days of AOR programming. My family spent a big chunk of our summers north of Lake Superior at our cottage. The Canadian night-time allowed for a jam packed AM radio selection from far away places. My brother and I would tune into "Beaker Street" at KAAY radio out of Little Rock. DJ Clyde Clifford seemed to be ahead of the game by playing deep cuts and off the wall stuff. That wasn't your typical AM radio stuff.

Sprinstung, Born in Da YOO Ess AYE... I have never been able to get into "The Boss". Maybe it's because I consider him more of a poet than a musician. When I listen to a song, I pay attention to the music more than lyrics (music over message). I always found his music to be boring and largely the same.

Are we discounting the entire rap/hiphop genre?

Ialways found his music to be boring and largely the same. In many of his songs, the choruses and verses are the same chord progression with a slightly different drum beat.

Sweet Caroline. I absolutely hate Sweet Caroline. +1 Also Honey by Bobby Goldsboro, Muskrat Love by Captain & Tenille, and Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band. I could go on, but thinking about this is starting to make me feel ill.
