My family spent a big chunk of our summers north of Lake Superior at our cottage. The Canadian night-time allowed for a jam packed AM radio selection from far away places. My brother and I would tune into "Beaker Street" at KAAY radio out of Little Rock. DJ Clyde Clifford seemed to be ahead of the game by playing deep cuts and off the wall stuff. That wasn't your typical AM radio stuff. In the pre-FM days, that program was a revelation when we could get it.

Sweet Caroline. I absolutely hate Sweet Caroline. +1 Also Honey by Bobby Goldsboro, Muskrat Love by Captain & Tenille, and Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band. I could go on, but thinking about this is starting to make me feel ill. Muskrat Love. makes me want to vomit. Gack!!

Lots of my "hates" already listed....especially Springsteen. Yoko Ono.
One not listed yet:
"Heroes" by David Bowie. OMG that song is an insult to music.
Also, in the "Christmas" genre: "Last Christmas". First, it's a horrible song. Second, just because it mentions Christmas does not mean it's a Christmas song. Ugh....I would like to run a spike into the ears of every DJ anywhere who puts that on the radio. Worst yet, I heard a remake of it this year. Who in their right mind would ever cover that song? Honestly, I'd rather hear the dogs barking out Jingle Bells than Last Christmas.

Any and everything by Pearl Jam. Not the music as much as Eddie Vetter needs to take the sock out of his mouth. He ruined a whole generation of rock singers.
...and yeah, Springsteen. I give him props for his staying power and his ability as an entertainer. Other than that, the only song I ever liked by him was Born To Run. Everything else was formulaic fodder.

I like the whole BtR album. It was, to a certain extent, the soundtrack of my youth. Aside from that, I'm not a Springsteen fan.

Don't forget Bob Dylan - yet another in a list of great songwriters who should have left the singing to someone else. Neil Young is another. In my first band we had a lead vocalist who was really pretty bad. The running gag was that he could nail the Neil Young song we did. We never did much until we replaced him....then we had more gigs than we really wanted.

Regarding Springsteen, the last thing I want to do, or even think I can do is change someone's mind. But I think he had two distinct careers which in my opinion my favorite one ended when he was "Born in the USA". Like Leftee, Born to Run was a soundtrack in my life when classmates were digging on Aerosmith and Kiss. Going back to the earlier stuff I was just captured by the big band. A powerhouse drummer, 2 keyboard players, 2 guitar players, a sax and a hyper showman with a mixture of teen angst and unbridled enthusiasm. "Rosalita", what with its tempo and key changes, a bunch of hotties charging the stage...it was far from disinterested and a massive departure from what was happening in that era. I had a bandmate who was one of the most cynical people I've ever known and the biggest Springsteen hater. He saw him in Detroit at Masonic Temple after a girlfriend dragged him to the show. He didn't necessarily come out a fan but uncharacteristically conceded that he "got it".
Ironically I only saw Springsteen once, at the Pontiac Silverdome. It was the Born in the USA tour and we had main floor seats. Between the crowd, the awful acoustics and the focus on newer stuff we left and hung out in the parking lot.

Only Wanna Be with You by Hootie and the Blowhards.
Dear God. It's like a cheery syrup sandwich for people who say they like music but they don't really know any music.

Are we discounting the entire rap/hiphop genre? I think we're limiting this to actual music...

As much as I like anything by EC over the course of his lengthy career, I am quick to turn off the car radio when "Wonderful Tonight" comes on. And it comes on and on and on. Enough already!
Eric, sorry about your headache. And if you want to sing about Pattie (and who wouldn't???), stick to "Layla" and "Bell-Bottom Blues." Please.

I had to fight to stay awake playing that. But...it was a good slow dance option and, like Brown Eyed Girl, it filled the dance floor. We actually got requests for it!!!! Like you, that's an immediate station change.

I was also saddled with Wonderful Tonight in a couple of my old working bands. I got so sick of it that I convinced the guys to replace it with Jeff Healey's "Angel Eyes" as the go-to last set belly rubber. Got sick of that one too, lol.

Talk about being bored out of my mind for a few minutes.

Macca's "simply having a marvelous Christmas".
He rapidly digressed into 'Groanie' music (a play on Grannie music- get it? nudge nudge) without John's influence, and this one was the most groan-worthy. Fortunately we only hear it it pre-Christmas.
(quick acknowledgement to some of the massively great stuff he did release, solo or with Wings)

I’ve only played “Wonderfull Tonight” for romantic effect. Whenever my wife would take forever "getting ready" I'd grab a guitar and serenade her. 🎵 "She puts on her make up...and puts on her make up...and puts on her make up..." Like a broken record.

There are plenty of others, but just to get the ball rolling, I’ll throw out Simple Man by Skynyrd. I can’t reach for the volume fast enough when that song comes on. The anthem of the underachieving lowlife, lol. Especially the melodramatic Shinedown cover.

The band itself i ignored until they played fake backing band on a Neil Young album which was the best for both of them in AGES (and for PJ, probably ever). Not a single warble, and even Neil stepped up.

Tom Petty's voice.......AHHHHHHHH! His music is great but his voice drives me nuts. Same goes for Bob Dylan, Ric Ocasic, Elvis Costello, Rolling Stones, John Mayer, Dave Mathews, and almost all of the 90's era Grunge band singers. It's not the music as much as the singers. The band and their music has to be phenomenal for me to tolerate a singer who's voice I don't care for. I can almost listen to John Mayer because he's an amazing player and I actually like some of his songs but the voice........bring me a bucket.
