As for Kubrick, Dr. Strangelove still holds at #1.

GREAT movie. Vincent Donofrio is scary good here. The way R. Lee Ermey carries the donut like it's a dead rat *kills* me every time I watch it.

I haven't seen it in years, but my recollection is everything after boot camp was a huge letdown. After such an epic performance by both Army and D'Onofrio, the rest of the movie was...just okay.

The bootcamp scenes are the best, even more so having been through it myself.

I loved it and I’m not a huge Kubrick fan, but as an ex Marine I have to say pretty good reenactment of what Marine corps boot camp was like . Ooh rah.

I loved the movie ever since it first came out. I do agree that the boot camp part is far better than the Vietnam part.

What, we didn't like Animal Mother in the second half of the movie? "You can talk the talk but can you walk the walk?"

Yeah... I sort of agree with you..it's almost like 2 different movies....after the first 56 minutes...the 2nd half is its own animal....but I'm sure Kubrick had his reasons for it.....
I can still slug through the 2nd half..it's not bad, but it just doesn't seem to tie into the first

In high school I read the book "The Short Timers" on which it is based.
I like the movie version of the boot camp better than the book, mainly because of R. Lee Ermey.
The Vietnam part of the story is MUCH better in the book though.
And the actor that plays Animal Mother was NOTHING like what I pictured while reading the book.

I'm a fan of Adam Baldwin from way back when. I first saw him in a film called "My Bodyguard". He was great in the TV show, "Chuck" and also in another TV show called "The Last Ship".

Exactly. The second half is good, but can’t possibly live up to the first half. It’s not that the second half is bad, the first half might be some of the greatest cinema of all time. I could almost have had them add another 30-40 minutes to the boot camp part and then just end it there.

Great movie. It's the best virtual boot camp experience I've ever had. The toilet seen was just freaked, and I speculate the movie would be better without it. Was very disturbed by the helicopter gunner just shooting at anyone, the madness of war seemed to be on full display in the movie.
Annnnd, still a true statement: Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" remains perhaps my favorite movie of all time.

Ermeys first movie was a movie called Boys in Company C which was a decent movie mostly because of him. Emmy was an actual Drill Instructor in real life before movies.

Read the book, seriously. Boot Camp is taken verbatim. The rest is dumbed down for rating. And there's an entire third act missing from the film. You will not be disappointed, the pdf or text version is free from Hasford's son.

I'll be in the minority here, but Kubrick just ruined movies for me, starting with 2001, the shining and fmj. I just didn't get him.

It was rather heartwarming.

Look for the PDF. If you can't find, PM. Finding a print copy is a bitch and expensive. I found several in the stone age, but it took years for each.
