If you had the opportunity to give one piece of advice (solicited) to a young person just starting out, what would that be?
For me, it's something I learned from my dad.
"Never let your ambition overshadow your good judgment."

One word, Plastics.
Don't drink cheap Scotch.
I have many others but they're not Moe's friendly.

Observe how your bride eats corn on the cobb...it will be a sign of good or bad times ahead....

"If you want to set yourself apart from the crowd, be honest." Something my dad told me.

Life is too short to play crappy guitars and drive crappy cars.
(although I usually use a bit more colorful language when I say this)

Get a mentor.
That comes from John T. Molloy's book, Live for Success.
Stay in contact with your mentor.

Most of the time, I point out to my daughter when another kid is acting like a butthole, and then I tell her she should not be a butthole. So I guess that counts.

Choose your friends wisely and don't hang around with losers.
Don't fall in love with every girl you see.
Take care of your body just in case you live to be 80.
Start saving for your retirement now.

Whenever you have multiple tasks to do always do the hardest ones first and the easier ones last. The hard one may teach you something that will make the easier ones even easier. It's all down hill after the hard ones are out of the way.
If you want to learn to play a musical instrument, take lessons from a bonafide teacher. You will learn faster and understand it better.
Don't eat until you're full. You'll thank me later.

Always do the right thing, work hard, save hard.
You want to be able to choose what you want to do in life, the more money you have the more choices you have.

Don't eat the yellow snow.
But seriously, the best advice I ever had was from a friend who was a former heroin addict. He was talking about the time he needed to ask for help and get clean. I said that must have been hard. He said, "well, you can't save your face and your (backside) at the same time".

Regarding life in general:
"As a young person it is easy to make mistakes that you can never correct"
And another ...
"Enough bad things will happen in life while you are doing your very best ... Don't create unnecessary stumbling blocks for yourself"
Regarding employment:
"Learn more than you are required to know and do more than you are required to do, because when people notice ... and they will notice ... good things will happen"

"Never let your ambition overshadow your good judgment." Jimmy, this is very good. An example I know of right away after reading that line is the story of Front Sight. There was a lot of bad press in the beginning (and through the years) because Dr. Piazza did exactly that. Had a vision and a dream that was too big for him to bring into existence. Fortunately the actual training has never suffered on a account of that over reach, but the progress of the resort/community project in general has suffered over the years on account of the (mostly legal) problems it created.

Listen to your "gut" instincts. It will tell you the right course of action long before your brain has it figured out.
I saw one of life's great truths on a bumper sticker......"You can't fix stupid".

I have one more -- there's a story behind it.
We moved west from the New York City area to Santa Monica in 1994-95 (my bride went first; I was bouncing back and forth for a year to close up things on the east coast).
The move was occasioned by her being admitted first to the professional certificate program, then the graduate program in screenwriting at the UCLA Film School.
Anyway, we were living out there, she'd be in class in the evenings, and one day a week I'd go to campus to sit in on a class, a large lecture, taught by Peter Guber.
Peter was/is a Hollywood A-lister -- he had been president of Sony Pictures, and a top exec (maybe chairman, I'm not sure) at Warner Bros. He'd come in once a week as adjunct faculty and lecture in the Independent Producers program of the grad school. his classes were always very interesting. I believe Peter now is a minority owner of the Dodgers.
One night his guest speaker was late (Peter used his classes to get people he wanted to meet or get to know better to come out, and they'd share the dias). Peter was not really prepared so he kind of got into a free form talk on his own career, how he started, and it got to the this:
Peter said people often ask him what it takes to "make it" in Hollywood. He told his own story, then said the main thing is you have to DO SOMETHING ... DO ANYTHING ... BUT DO SOMETHING (his words, exactly). Don't wait for someone to offer you something, just DO SOMETHING.
I've never forgotten that evening, the lecture hall, or Peter's off-the-cuff comments. You gotta be in it to win it. Can't wait around for good fortune and opportunity to find you. JUST DO SOMETHING.
Success, in the end, is 5% inspiration, and 95% perspiration.
I kind of had already been in that category. And it has always worked for me.

I agree with that -- I was told that by a man I greatly respect very early in my own career. He was right, of course. In my world, he is known as the Godfather (90 years old, still going strong -- a true force of nature).

Your values and principles can never be taken from you, but you can foolishly give them up.
Don’ trust everyone by default because there are people who will take advantage of you. Trust those who have earned your trust.
Don’t ever get down on yourself. When in doubt, pull yourself up and know you can meet the task at hand.

Respect and Trust -- hard to earn, so easy to squander. Once lost, often impossible to rebuild. Don't sell your birthright for a bowl of porridge (biblical reference but applies to values and principles as above^^^).
