I must be getting old.
Whenever I see a yahoo news story about the latest hijinks of some supposedly famous influencer, I have no idea who the heck they are, much less are they influencing me.
Who are all these people, and where are they posting their instructions on how I should be influenced by them?
I feel so uninfluenced!
Help!

Unless I'm under the influence, I'm not usually influenced by the influencers.

Yeah, I'm remarkably ignorant of who these people are. In general, I don't pay much attention to people I don't personally interact with. My wife know who every celebrity and pseudo celeb (the famous for being famous types) is, who they're married to, who they divorced, etc.
She also knows all about the royal family...another group that I really couldn't care less about. I just don't understand the whole fascination with the personal lives of famous people. None of that has any impact on my life whatsoever and my interest coincides with that.

I tend to believe influence is greater when a person is younger; establishing a personal identity involves a lot of wandering around in the dark until a person finds their...ego's center of gravity. That's why most "professional influencers" (read: unskilled workers) are usually younger, wearing the latest fashions and makeup, etc., to enhance the appeal to the younger slice of society.
Proof to support this hypothesis is there are no octos employed as influencers on AARP's social media platforms.
However, influence is all around us: billboards, TV commercials, our family and friends, etc. Nobody is immune.
But professional influencers? I'm right there with ya on this.

The only influencer I'm liable to pay attention to is the one holding a gun at me at the ATM.

My wife and kids and the dogs are my main influencers.
Kelly Clarkson and the Kardashians? Not so much.
Nope: don't check in with them all that often...

I’m proud to say I’m largely ignorant if this phenomenon. I’m aware of it from a distance. And that’s close enough, thank you very much.
Except for you people. 😂

Lest we forget, "influencers" are nothing new:

Nope. It also annoying seeing them in the wild, usually taking up space and being totally oblivious to everything around them.

In my little world, using social media means sending messages via Facebook Messenger, posting a "Happy Birthday" post on a friend's FB page, or participating in forums such as this one. But, even I have heard about these self-appointed "influencers" and I just have to shake my head in amazement and disgust. When you have people who actually describe themselves as being an "influencer", how is it possible for them to even move around carrying such a big ego?
I categorize these people in the same group as professional critics (Food, Music, Film, Fashion, etc.), editorial writers, and advice columnists... and probably politicians too. IOW, people who feel that their opinion has more merit and should carry more weight then that of the rest of us, and that they should be paid for their opinions.
I am SO thankful that these people are given a public forum to tell me what I should eat, drink, think, wear, buy, like, and how to act! (Sarcasm Alert!)

But blacksunshine has me looking at Joyo pedals. Yeah, but, vis-a-vis one another here, we're not "influencers". We're "enablers".
Dialing in correct nomenclature is crucial...

Every time I see the word "influencer", it's never anyone whose name I am familiar with.

Nope. As others have perfectly elaborated above, I'd only add to say good luck to anybody trying to sell whatever bs of the day to me and mine.

I think I am just too laid back. I also have a pretty strong anti-most-things and suspicious bent. I have never been influenced or in awe of any kind of celebrity. Entertainment stars, popular heroes, sports stars, POLITICIANS, people just famous for being famous (i.e Kardashians) and "influencers". They are basically people no smarter than I am, so what makes them so special?
I don't care what celebrities think.
I don't buy stuff based on celebrity endorsements. In fact, I often move the opposite direction. If a company needs a celebrity huckster, their stuff apparently can't sell on its own merits.
What really amazes me is how many people are enamored with celebrities.
As an example, I sometimes watch the CBS Morning Show. Gayle King is one of the hosts. She is just enamored with all things celebrity. My wife and I take turns laughing at her. I'm convinced she's on the show only to be comedy relief.

A couple of years ago a work colleague asked his daughters, who were about 7 and 4 at the time what they wanted to be when they grew up...,,., they both said YouTube influencers. ;-)

How many people here watch Keith Williams on Five Watt World, or Rick Beato on Everything Music, or Josh over at JHS Pedal, or Rhett Schull or Samurai Guitarist, or ....
Hate to say it, but those guys are "influencers," and that's not a bad thing. You don't have to be cut Kim Kardashian cloth to occupy the role.

Darrell Braun has influenced me to be happy with my Squier Affinity Strat from 1999, so I suppose I am influenced by someone on YouTube. And Rick Beato is pretty cool, too.
You're right, langford!

What really amazes me is how many people are enamored with celebrities. There are 'royal watchers' in the UK that report on the bathroom habits of Her Royal Highness Tha Kween and her family circle. It's an entire industry.

I regularly watch several youtoobers -- a couple talk about jazz recordings. They are vastly more knowledgeable than I am on the subject -- so they influence me. Same with a couple guys who tie flies. A few woodworkers get my attention -- and yeah, Beato is a goldmine of information.
There's nothing wrong with being influenced by guys on the Youtube -- I only pick people who I know are smarter than I am on a particular subject.
Of course, if you aren't very smart to begin with, I can see where there might be a problem.

I’m totally under their spell. If Peegoo suggests something, I’m all over it😀 I know... right?!?!?! It's true: Peegoo, the old guy Svengali of MT2.
No one seems t'know for sure how he does it, but I'm pretty sure it involves emerging stealthily from his man cave dressed in a black, Spandex leotard, armed with a blowgun and darts infused with some drug that reduces others to helpless, suggestible jelly...
