The Microsoft Motto: "If it ain't broke, so what? Upgrade it anyway. We're not paying 7,000 software designers to drink Yoo Hoo and play ping pong."

Hopefully it's no Windows 8... ugh! The rumor mill is saying it's going towards a Linux backend which would be a huge move for Microsoft. It's also more likely to be touchscreen friendly. Microsoft has had success with their Surface tablets, but Win10 is terrible to use with your finger. So I'd suspect to see a very MacOS/iPadOS like system. Also they are probably going to roll out this release as PaaS (platform as a service) and offer a ton of software on a monthly charge as a virtual machine. Microsoft is investing heavily in cloud computing more each day and I expect this to be one of their big pushes. Get ready to pay as you go!

Most websites now push most of the computing burden down to the browser/OS vs server rendered content, so hopefully it addresses that and makes things more responsive.

So much for the "Windows 10 is the last version of Windows" hype that surrounded its release.
I didn't think that would ever really come to pass. MSFT is, mainly, in the business of selling software. Never coming up with new product would put a severe crimp in that business model.

Windows 11 ? Uh oh. They did so well with Windows 7 etc !
Despite my mad dive into a 20 year career as a fearless crazy programmer, I'm feeling a Luddite gene becoming active and primed for Windows 11.
I just figured out(after a half ass two weeks) that setting my cookie restriction to "strict"(a totally new stupid feature), interfered with logging on to a health provider site...which could have been dangerous...and probably was to others !
And even the health provider had no idea it was causing the issue, or how to fix it. Suffice it to say, no other website I use had this issue.
Lord knows what Windows 11 will bring !
Count me out until they turn out the lights on Win 10...

I didn't have problems with either Vista or 8. Vista's biggest problem was that it was being shipped on PCs without enough memory. Upgrade the memory and you were fine. That PC I had was fine until the motherboard/power supply &$^# the bed. 8 looked funny but was otherwise okay for me. 10 is just plain obnoxious. It is always churning and bubbling and I never know what it is doing, it keeps trying to get me to "finish setting up my PC" that I've owned since December 2013, and keeps moving things on me so that even the smallest things I have to Google how to do it, because it has probably moved somewhere stupid and maybe even need a command prompt.
Software tends to go through cyclical phases, so I'm going to guess 11 will be good and they'll get it right, then they'll try to get wise and 12 will be awful. Apple went through a phase where their iOS updates were constantly awful, but they eventually got out of it and no one seems to remember. I had an iPhone 6 that was close to being a brick a few times because of stupid updates. I swore I was going to switch back to android, but then they got it right just in time for it to be paid off, I got a Xs and all is fine.
If I'm wrong and they screw up 11, they are going to leave a massive chunk of market share wide, wide open.

Hopefully it is more like Win 7, but I believe it will double down on the Win 10 theme.
Just had another forced update that closed all my programs and reset my fonts and other settings.
I HATE WIN 10

I’m fine with Win 10 and probably won’t do 11 unless I happen to buy a new computer that comes with it. Not likely anytime soon.

I never had a problem with 7. When it went unsupported I took that laptop offline and its my dedicated recording unit. Too many programs not supported by 10 to make that transition. I took my wife's old work laptop to do my online business and that one still has 8. I recall having the option for a free transition from 7 to 10. Does anyone know the protocol of doing 8 to 10, or eventually 8 to 11?

"it keeps trying to get me to "finish setting up my PC"
Does that to you , too, eh? I thought it was a Dell issue. Happens to me, now and again. Don't remember what I did to stop it, but haven't seen it lately (famous last words lol)
Auf,
"I never had a problem with 7"
Nor did I. My mom still uses Win7
Ragtop,

MSFT has a track record of putting out OSes where about every other one is junk. Pattern isn't cast in stone and is subjective but here's what I thought of different OSes I've seen. Here's how I'd rate them: ( ✓ = "ok", ✕ = "less than ok")
95 ✓ 98 ✕ 98SE ✓ ME ✕ XP ✓ Vista ✕ 7 ✓ 8 ✕ (even Microsoft gave up on this one, before end of service date) 8.1 ✓ 10 ? Minor issues but, overall, it's doable, from my viewpoint 11 ?

I went 98-XP-7 and then finally went Mac…use Win 10 at work but we are so locked down (DoD network) that it’s hard to know if it’s a Win 10 issue or a security protocol causing the woes.

Technology companies will go out of existence if they simply sit on products like Win95. The issue seems to be our frustration with companies that discontinue support for abandoning old products. It's a shame those old product managers were re-tasked as new products were launched. Guess these companies are not as well off as we thought....laughter and giggling.

JDC - mine just gives me the option to keep "setting up" (which, I think, means setting up cloud services I don't want/need) or "Remind me in 3 days". Luckily it is longer than 3 days before it "reminds" me again, but it does keep coming back. I agree on the every other OS bit. Also, in looking at the article, it seems like Microsoft is aware of the gripes and is attempting to do better with a cleaner interface, more classic look, and lighter weight, largely in response to Chrome OS taking market share. That is the right direction to go in. Whether they're successful or not, who knows.
It didn't occur to me that it wouldn't automatically update, since mine started with 8 and has gotten all the updates so far. I likely wouldn't pay to upgrade either. This is an 8 year old tower, so a new OS and a memory upgrade is probably going to be close to the cost of a new tower. Do we know for sure that it will cost money to upgrade? They might do well to offer it for free just to keep precious market share.

I had Vista. It was meh. Windows 7 was what Vista should have been. 7 was a wonderful OS. I don't have a lot of issues with 10 but certainly more than with 7. The absolute worst Windows OS's were 3.1 and ME.

I agree with LTB. I really liked Win7, and was comfortable with it for many years. When that machine finally croaked (I think I started a thread about it), I hooked up my mom's nearly new Win10 machine which I had inherited.
Can't pass up a free computer, right? But I really do hate 10. Everything seems difficult, nothing is intuitive like 7 was. For me, anyways.

I’ve learned W10 well enough via my work laptop. I’m at the point where I get it.
I’m still glad I jumped into the Apple world (for my personal computing needs) a year and a half ago. This is my way forward. And once I retire I don’t foresee any more Windows for me.

It's 4-5 weeks into my office's transition back to Windows from Apple. Thus far there have been no issues.

I received an email ad from Best Buy regarding Windows 11, due to arrive at year's end and into 2022. This ad contained this link, which some of you may be interested in. (The Edge browser will continue "as is,' it seems....) www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-specificationsI don't get this "Microsoft account" stuff. During the past few months my desktop PC has been prompting me to fix my account; "problem likely due to password change" (not). I hadn't seen this Account activity until the past few months or so. It seems now that you have to have an account (read the MS Windows 11 overview linked above), and will be required for installation, upgrading Windows, etc. I think someone here previously suggested that a fee for use may be forthcoming; so it seems.... I bought an inexpensive laptop (with Windows 10s installed, and I first then had to establish a MS account to set up and use it) almost a couple of years ago with the intent to install Linux Mint and see if I could figure that out and use it. But, I never did this, since Win10 on my PC "seemed" to get easier to use (with experience). Now, with this Big Brother-like nature of Win11, Linux is looking inviting again. I wonder if there are anti-virus programs available for Linux?

Why does Microsoft keep rearranging my furniture? I just get comfortable with his latest shuffle, and then here they come in the middle of the night and the Microsoft Feng Shui team is at it again.
I got used to Shuffle 10, where my recliner was moved to face a brick wall. I compensated by watching the big screen TV over my shoulder with a hand mirror.
Refrigerator moved to the attic? Okay, it was inconvenient, but I lost a few pounds tramping up and down the stairs all day.
Moving my garage onto the neighbor's front lawn was a head scratcher, (especially for the neighbor) but having their sprinklers wash my cars every day was a moderate trade off.
I did have a few complaints about Shuffle 10's relocation of my shower directly in front of the picture window facing the street. (the complaints were from parents whose kids walked past my window while I was soaping up).
So now here comes Shuffle 11. I guess I can hope for a trampoline in the kitchen, at least.

I bought an inexpensive laptop (with Windows 10s installed, and I first then had to establish a MS account to set up and use it) Seems as if I had to do the same when I bought an inexpensive desktop with Windows 10 pre-installed. But, since I already had a Hotmail email account (showing my age since Hotmail was transitioned to Outlook 10? years ago), I think all I had to do was sign in to that webmail account for setup to commence.

I was extorted into buying a Win 10 machine after my Win 7 laptop self destructed after it updated on it's own in the dead of the night. Every time Win 10 updates -- something that worked fine before doesn't work anymore. After a recent update my wireless mouse (a Microsoft product) stopped working for three days -- this happens every time.
I wish Bill Gates were being blasted into space along with Bezos -- and I hope Windows is the OS that runs the rocket. 50/50 chance those suckers won't make it home.

Remind Every time Win 10 updates -- something that worked fine before doesn't work anymore. Reminds me of an incident with a drummer I used to work with. He had a Microsoft Zune. At 12:00 on December 30th of some year (2008?), it just quit. Evidently there was a glitch in the date coding. Most of them, with a certain size drive, did the same from what I read.

When Microsoft announced they were terminating support for Win7, I skedaddled to Mac and have not looked back. Have a single Win10 notebook computer that I use to run Quicken only. Mac Quicken is garbaaage.
