You're driving down the road at a fair clip, maybe a few miles over the limit... just like everyone else.
A car appears in your rear view mirror, and they're riding your bumper like they skipped school on the day they taught safe following distance in Driver's Ed.
You come to a long straightaway, where it's both safe and legal for them to pass you...
and they don't.
WTH?

This is especially true if I can pull up next to a car in the right lane and obstruct the entire highway.

Just watch for road rage. You sound like my wife, though she expresses the same sentiment in a completely different manner lol.

They probably are fearless behind you because you will get zapped by radar if there's a speed trap ahead.
Once you slide to the right, now it's them in the crosshairs, and they wimp out.

If they are close enough to bother me, I will keeping slowing down till they overtake me.If they continue to refuse to overtake I will pull off to the side of the road and let them go by. I want them in a position where if they cause an accident I wont be in it.

When I was in the workforce, driving home from work across the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, I would often get tailgated by a large white pickup truck that looked like a stormtrooper from the Star Wars Movies. I think the car manufacturers made that vehicle look like a villain on purpose.

Almost as bad as the guy ahead of you (on a 2-lane highway) who dawdles along below the speed limit in a "no passing" zone and then floors it when the double line turns to dashes on your side.
No shortage of clueless jackasses on the road these days.

I'm convinced that a certain percentage of drivers are completely oblivious to the natural flow of traffic.
The guy tailing you probably has no idea he's following too closely and no idea why you would slow down, also probably doesn't realize the dotted yellow line indicates passing and you're trying to get him to pass.
These people are able to follow basic traffic laws without constantly causing accidents but are incapable of understanding how to safely "flow" with traffic and how to anticipate other driver's actions in order to keep everyone happy. By incapable I mean, no matter of instruction or real-world experience will lead them to understand the impact their driving has on others. Incapable. They just drive however they want and are convinced it's normal, while others are baffled at their nonsensical decisions.

Just stopped in Lonoke Arkansas for the night from Michigan to Texas. I know what Pinetree speaks of. Another observation is truck drivers driving way out of their lanes. WTH? I sense a whole new crop of rookie drivers.

My theory on this is that such people have esteem issues. Maybe they don’t have any particular thing that has captured their interest enough for them to excel at. They are uninteresting by nature, and it makes them mad.
So there you are in a puny car, and they ride your bumper in an unsafe way, anonymously brave, and you cannot ignore them.

Sometimes if I'm being closely tailgated and I can see it's some goober who really cares about how clean and shiny their car is, I flip on the windshield washers for about two seconds to knock the bugs off the windshield.
Nine times out of ten the tailgaiter backs off and stays there.

Adolescent ducklings following mummy without a clue where else to go. And then there's others crashing into the one solitary tree along a deserted highway in a world of wonders. 😎

Just drove a thousand miles to the Mojave.
That's California for you, and the slow lane is ALWAYS the left lane.

I am always aware of who is behind me, and who may be coming up on me. When anyone gets too close, I move over to the right lane.

I think most of these people aren't aware of what they're doing and are more often than not on the phone. I've been tailed like this in the right lane of a 3 lane highway and on occasion moved to the center lane to watch them speed by only to catch up with the next car. What is happening through that piece of glass in front of them isn't reality, its like a TV show they have on but aren't really watching.

I caught myself doing this to someone a couple weeks ago. No cell phone involved. My mind was elsewhere and there I was on this guy's bumper.
I did back off. If I could have apologized to him I would have.

Give these 'gaters a stern rebuke: "un-friend" 'em. If that doesn't leave 'em chastened, I don't know what will...

I think the tailgaters and other aggressive drivers know exactly what they are doing. For some, it’s a power trip using their cars or trucks to project dominance on others. Most couldn’t do that face to face so they use their vehicles.

Piney, the term is 'speed leeches'. They want someone in front of them so they don't have to pay attention to their dash and can just follow.

I also will continue to slow, and as much as needed, as long as they have a safe place to pass. I don't try to hold up other people but I won't be tailgated. And yes, that has led to a bit of road rage behind me at times, but if they have room to go around then I will "stand my ground" so to speak and force the issue. Speeding up is not the answer as being tailgated at 80 is more of a problem than at 60.

I remember my dad doing an emergency braking with a tailgater behind us when I was a kid. Scared me to death. The gator guy backed off for the better when what he was getting himself into with the always armed and ready senior would not have ended well. Didn't distract Dadzilla for even a split second from the subject on discussion while driving through the night together. 🙂

Drivers in Tennessee are notorious for tailgating. There is not enough speed to make most of them happy. If I sped up to 90 they would still be too close. When I get one I keep slowing down until they pass me. There is no place I need to be that is worth my life or someone else's. If they want to flip me off when they pass I just smile and wave. It just proves what an idiot they are. Like flipping me off is going to do me bodily harm. Do your worst middle finger.
