Looking to mess around in that space somewhere between boost & drive w/out having to open a line of credit.
Archer Ikon, Tumnus, Sugar Drive, Horsebreaker, Bad Horse, Soul Food, Zeus Drive ... and so on... and so on...
So many to choose from. Such a price range. What are you using, how do you like it & why?

These sorts of drive pedals really do not add anything to the sound like a distortion does. Instead, they push the preamp in your amp to get you a bit more saturation and touch sensitivity. What this means is you have to aleady be in love with your amp's tone and response.
I think the reason why so many players go through overdrive/boost pedals is because they're expecting a quantum change in their tone (springtime fresh creamy endless sustain, etc.), and that's not the case at all.
Years ago a pal of mine owned a Klon and I borrowed it and tried it with several of my amps. It really did its thing with well with the Boogie MK IV, Carvin X100 and the Fender Champ, but not so much with other tube amps. This was back when the original Klons were affordable. Was it so good that I had to get one for myself? No.

I'm happy with the TC Electronic Zeus, and it's cheap.
It has a BIT of hair, not much.
It just makes everything louder and sound better though.

I have Soul Food and have kept it on my board. Not sure if it's remotely close to a Klon, but some vids were convincing. Of course those can't reproduce the feel of a pedal as you're playing it.

I’ve also got a Soul Food, and I loved it. It’s not currently on my board, but it would be if I went back to individual pedals.

I posted this very topic a few months back.
I'll search for the thread and link ya, there were some good suggestions.

Thanks Blacksunshine. I'd forgotten I chimed in on that one about a Soul Food that left me uninspired. In retrospect I probably should have given it a little more time...

I'll copypasta my review at Sweetwater on the TC Electronic one. I am still VERY pleased with it - I don't turn it off now.
"First, the good. It's a very decent pedal, especially for the price. Very low noise floor - if your signal is clean, it'll respect that in spades. Switch is easy-on-easy-off, no audible click, which is a bonus. I wasn't expecting that. It does everything from very little grit to healthy rock overdrive (AC/DC et al is relatively easy to get maxed out with a Les Paul into a clean Fender at that point). Definition to chords and complex arpeggios that I rarely have found in an OD pedal.
Second, turn on the buffer. This is where the half star gets knocked off. It comes shipped with it off. The overall signal gets more sparkle, more life with it on and there is no functional difference when it's bypassed. To get to the switch, you need a 7/16" socket (or pliers and swearing, I recommend the former) to remove the input and output jack knobs. This reveals the shortcoming of the pedal in terms of potential longevity - the jacks while very secure especially with the nut reinforcement are typical budget affairs. Not surprising given the price point. Once you've got those nuts off, you have to remove four small screws. They are black and TINY. Use the box it comes to catch the screw as it falls. Finding it if it drops outside a confined space is a pain, especially with "I'm not young anymore" eyes.
If it'd shipped with the buffer on, I never would have guessed it didn't have standard jacks, but they're cheap SMD components throughout as I guess one should expect at this price point. It sounded MUCH better to me than the EHX Soul Food, which I didn't even bother to bring home for a trial after a short time with a demo model at a shop.
This will get the faux Klon/lower gain OD done nicely.
Does it sound like a real Klon? I, like the vast majority of us, have no idea, but it sounds very good."

I had a Tumnus Deluxe on my board for a year and eventually moved it on because I couldn't bond with it. There was an upper mid hump that didn't fit my sound.

Yea, these sorts of pedals either work with your main amp/guitar(s) or they don't.
I wasn't expecting to love the damn Klon(e) myself but figured what the hell, I hadn't tried one in earnest in a long time and I have the luxury of playing as loud as my tubes can handle these days.

EHX East River Drive. Less than $100, I give it a thumbs up.

This exc but lengthy vid comparing 10 popular Klones got my attention. I actually thought the 'Conspiracy Theory' sounded best (in the under $5k category) but of course I wasn't in the room.

I never tried a Klon clone. I don't like Tube Screamers with a clean pedal-platform amp. They are tolerable with an edge of breakup sounding amp but just barely. I sold most of my pedals and got another Eleven Rack to use with my live rig. I have a couple pedals I run in the effects loop and that works well for having more options.

One issue with TS type: once I get them to sound fine for solos/single notes then I hit a few chords they sound different, usually too jarring.

In case anyone's interested, after quite a bit or research I ended up getting a 'Smokin' Amp Co. Golden Pony.' US made, high quality components, 3 yr warranty, not terribly expensive (less than Archer Ikon or Tumnus) and rather 'boo-teek' if I say so myself. It sounds *great*.

I have the 3 knob Tumnus. I like it as a boost with added hair into a tube amp. Plus it has a small footprint. I also have a Ceriatone Centura that sounds a bit better/warmer to my ears but I think I fried it plugging in the wrong power supply. It’s big and bulky but I sure wish it were working.
