Since he B-slapped him instead of punching or kicking him, it was only a "micro-aggression"...

Chris Rock's joke, Will Smith's punchline.

If it was real, I would think battery charges would be in order. No way Chris Rock would ever press charges in that situation (and he said he will not). Bad enough he got slapped on TV, imagine what kind of wimp he would look like if he then sought to press charges.

Isn’t b-slapping an invitation to duel?

My wife is in the "fake" camp. Her arguments were systematically dismissed. Why would Smith just happen to be sitting at the end of row with easy access? (Because he was a nominee with a likely win, and also (I think) a presenter)Why didn't anyone stop him on his way up? (Because no one expected it or thought that it wasn't a bit)Why didn't they cut to a commercial? (Same answer, all weren't sure if this was some kind of staged event).
Honestly, the only upside for this to be some kind of staged stunt would be to get the Hollywood haters talking smack on social media and make them the villains in this whole show.
Hmmmm...

like I said earlier, if it was staged I don't think he would've been shouting F bombs from his seat

Lucky that it wasn't Alec Baldwin: he would've gone to slap Rock and suffered a "malfunction" whereby his fist failed to unclench around the roll of nickels he was holding...
"Hey: it wasn't my fault...I didn't think it was loaded..."

It was definitely not staged. You could see it on Will's face, he was pissed. And award notwithstanding and not having seen the movie he won for, I don't think he's really that good of an actor.

So, here we are... A guy, at the Oscars who's up for and eventually wins best actor, goes up on stage and b***** slaps a presenter. He then goes back to his seat and screams a bunch of f-bombs, all on national TV.
No one honestly knows if it was real or staged. Modern life is weird, man.

^ It's the modern version of the Coliseum. The upside is no one is being fed to the lions; at least not yet.

This incident was actually pretty low-key. Think of all the "regular" people in the news who have no verbal, conflict-resolution skills whatsoever: rather than "talking it through", their response to an insult or disagreement is to immediately resort to busting caps, usually with piss-poor marksmanship and total disregard for innocent bystanders.
It would seem that public civility, if not yet dead, is at least gravely ill.

Could be a new trend. Maybe Dave Chapelle could hire Chris Rock to take the blows from inspired audience members in the future.

How could something that occurred during the show be an attempt to get ratings?Either you were watching, or you missed it. If we knew about it days ahead because it was recorded, that’s one thing.

The uncensored video gives more credibility to me, especially Chris Rock's awkward contrition "I'm going to, ok?" response.

Prior to the incident viewership was about 9 million. After the incident and internet blowup viewership jumped to 15 million. Without the incident the ratings were tracking very low going to be worse than last year, which were the worst of all time. Remember Will Smith was still in the audience, not removed by security and was still waiting for the results of his nomination category. Odd that as Will approached Chris, Chris utters Uh oh...Richard. Will played Richard Williams in the film King Richard.

I don't think the area where he grew up (Wynnefield/Philadelphia) is exactly "ghetto". Also, he went to private Catholic school and his parents were white-collar professionals, so maybe he wanted to display his "street cred".
In any case, given his objection to the "joke", just standing up, saying "hey, buddy: that was over the top" and demanding an immediate apology might have been just as effective and a classier way to handle the situation.
Oh well: Hollywood people live in another world...
