The event isn't interesting me as much as listening to news outlets try to make sense of it and force one of their many narratives on it.
Will's talent was only ever mediocre, but he's been sniffing his own farts for a VERY long time and seems to consider his own family some sort of royalty. Of course he slapped Chris Rock. How do you think he is with housekeepers, waitresses or his assistants? The man is probably a total nightmare. His kids are nuts and just as narcissistic. Apparently he's been in an "open relationship" and his wife has been bangin' around like crazy, so God only knows what sort of dynamic is going on there.
As for Rock's joke, it didn't land well and probably shouldn't have been told. Not his best moment. But, a joke that doesn't quite land isn't quite the same as being offensive. It just means he probably should have rehearsed his stuff for someone, but since he's a seasoned pro he went out colder than he should've been.
If there is ever a Comedy Central Roast of Will Smith, they should tie him up like Hannibal Lector!

and people laugh at me cause I think wrestling is real... . . . (no, I don't really) I’ve got a Ben Franklin that says old Will wouldn’t slap one of those “fake” wrestlers.

In terms of my exposure to Smith's output, I've only seen "Men in Black" and "I, Robot" and am aware of that "Wild, Wild West" remake. Doesn't his choice of roles tend to gravitate towards that sort of macho character? If that's correct, pulling such a stunt, pre-planned or not, would tend to titillate his presumed fan base, so that sort of calculus could have been involved.
Since publicity stunts are as old as Hollywood itself, it's no wonder that people suspect that ulterior motives are at work.

Since he issued an apology I guess we can rule out that it was staged.

p.s. When I was a little tike, my Great Uncle George promised to take me cat fishing, but first we had to go slap the hogs. I started to cry because I didn’t want to slap a hog. A lot of my family are hill folk and me, being city folk, misunderstood. When my Mom come to investigate why I was crying, she laughed and informed me we weren’t going to slap any hogs. We were going to feed them and that my Great Uncle George was using a hill folk slang word, “slop”, for feeding hogs.
Well, unlike the Smith/Rock situation, no violence occurred on the farm that day, no hogs were harmed and I got to go cat fishing in the pond on my Great Uncle George’s and Great Aunt Annie’s farm. A fun time was had by all.

Since he issued an apology I guess we can rule out that it was staged. Well I agree that it probably wasn't staged, but the apology doesn't necessarily mean it couldn't been part of a publicity stunt.

Publicity for who? I don't think he needs publicity, especially the negative kind.

Playing devil's advocate of course;
Publicity for the Oscar's
For Chris Rock and Will Smith
Distraction of the awfulness of world events
Public awareness of Alopecia
Interest in the movie Smith won the oscar for
Social media excitation
And on and on.
I think both sides of the fan bases of Smith/Rock will have an upcoming warm and fuzzy from the inevitable kumbaya moment between the two.

His apology notably omitted Chris Rock - he apologized to the Academy and a few others down the line, but never Chris.

Actually he singled out Chris today in his apology.

Actually he singled out Chris today in his apology. Correct. The apology in his speech omitted Rock, and he apologized to him in the statement I posted above today.

I stand corrected!
Though,a publicist/agent/lawyer/whatever probably had to talk him into it.

If it wasn't staged, The Academy should strip him of the award. In my not so humble opinion.

I have to agree, I’m not really in support of taking unrelated things away from people based on their actions and/or mistakes.

^ That’s what really gets me. Insults are frequent in that forum. I mean, I didn’t watch but I hear the hosts of the show were making fun of their open marriage earlier in the show.
Maybe the fact that it was about her medical condition makes it worse? I don’t know.

And one of the hosts lqst night started off the show w a few jabs about their open relationship. And he took offense to him making fun of her medical condition. All that and him being up for best actor probably had him ready to pop, and so he did.

They post everything and talk about everything. They have a podcast to talk about their open marriage. They tossed their children into recording sessions and into movies. They live off of people commenting on their lives.

Very true. I read a tweet that said something to the effect of “this is why he got sent to Bel-Air in the first place” and I found that pretty funny.

Those two pretty much ruined it for the Academy Awards. Instead of a 24 hour onslaught about the winners...nothing but talk about Will and Chris. It's Hollywood...

I read that ticket sales for Rock's comedy tour are way up! I learned tonight that his tour starts this weekend. I still think it was a real incident and not staged, but the timing is certainly curious.
