SIG 229DAK 40 cal. - When I was in the Coast Guard, they switched from the Barretta 9 to these. I loved it so mush I ran out and got one. Great weapon. I’ve only shot DAK once, and it’s interesting. I don’t know if I could transition back and forth with other action types. I feel the same way about H-K’s LEM, I have one but it’s a very different experience from everything else.

Seems as good a thread as any for a NGD post.. Last week I bought a Springfield Armory Garrison 1911. Blued in .45acp. I got it on sale for $699, $14 for shipping, and my FFL didn't charge me for the transfer:) It's a great-looking gun and its good to have a .45 again.. The last one I had was a series-80 Colt that I sold 10 years ago to pay for the security deposit for an apartment.
The only thing I don't like is that it comes with slim grips and bushings, which have to be switched out with standard bushings to fit regular thickness grips. I've got some Challis hex-drive bushings and slot head grip screws on the way, along with some Pachmayr signature grips.

I bought the Springfield GI model when they first came out. I couldn't pick up the small sights so I sent the slide back to Springfield and had the sights upgraded. Its a sweet shooter. Everybody needs a 1911.

I have a 1991-A1 series 80 also, I bought it in 92. On a whim I checked prices on some gun buyer site and was pleasantly surprised, I always assumed the 1991-A1 was the ugly reject of the 1911 fans.
Is Gunbroker.com an accurate site to judge prices?

I've been kicking around the idea of a Rock Island 1911. My brother picked up one and says he likes it better than his Colt. Anyone have experience with RI?

If anyone is curious what kind of knucklehead buys old surplus Carcano Calvary Carbines that are impossible to find ammo for are, well, I'm one.
For $219, I figured even if its a POS, it will be a cool wall hanger and conversation piece.
When it came in I was pleasantly surprised, very solid, good shape, and the one they shipped to me was made in 1894!
Now, if I could just find 6.5x52mm.....
Ugh

Is Gunbroker.com an accurate site to judge prices? There's a lot of silly bidding war stupid money prices on there, but for the most part, what you find on GB is the current reality. You may find better deals, but those better deals are the exception rather than the rule. Unfortunately In my experience of course, YYMV

Everybody needs a 1911. Yea, I got one when they came out, it ran flawlessly even with this awful baby bottle nipple Israeli wadcutter I use to test feed - if it feeds that reliably, it will feed anything. I didn't have to touch a thing. The sights are what they are, same as my FN P35 (first gen Hi-Power to those not in the know). I sold the Springfield years ago to a dear friend who loved it more than I did, after getting my "made for me" Sig no-rail GSR1911 back when I was a SigNificant dealer (when they tried to go dealer direct) and my rep treated me like gold. I told him when they came out that I wanted one for ME if they ever did a nitroned or not stainless no rail version, and a dozen for the shop. Few months later, one showed up along with 12 other ones. It had a post it note on the case, "If you don't like this, you don't like guns." It puts every single 1911 I've ever shot to shame, at any price. They ran it through the head smith at their R&D shop apparently, and well, it's amazing. Shoots so well it's almost boring. I sold all my other 45s after, they got NO range time any more. It also has Novak night sights thankfully, so no tiny GI stuff. And rosewood, not maple!

When 1911s come up I get the urge to buy one. It’s the only firearm I don’t have that I still want.

That's a nice piece Rev!
As a side note the bass pro Promags are garbage. I only run Wilson Combat mags in my 1911.

I looked everywhere to handle one first, but no luck. Enough online friends have one that I was comfortable doing it.

My 1911 Colt was made in 2001, inherited when my cousin Richard passed away. It has what looks like a matt finish stainless steel, I think they call it a mirror finish. It’s accuracy is really sweet, it’s like the trajectory is controlled by mind, even at fairly long range I’m hitting the target.

I’ve been on a bit of a buying spree before I leave no sales tax NH, and that included one last firearm - one from my long time bucket list. I’ve wanted a Steyr AUG since before the ‘94 AWB, but never got around to it. Steyr started manufacturing them in Alabama years ago, but you don’t often see them in stores. It’s a fascinating design!

I first became aware of the 1911 Colt in 1963 when I saw Mickey Spillane (as private eye Mike Hammer) in The Girl Hunters. A utilitarian weapon packing quite a wallop, as opposed to James Bond and his 7.65mm Walther. If 007's round was "like a brick through a plate glass window," as bragged by Bond's weapon master, what must the .45 ACP's impact resemble? I carried a .45 in Vietnam and then again as a base MP at Fort McArthur in California, but never owned one until 1999, when I bought the compact version.

I'd like to learn some 1911 gunsmithing and maybe build a custom gun for myself one day. There aren't many (any?) 1911 'smiths near me, that I've been able to find. Learning how to polish/throat, do trigger jobs, barrel fitting, extractor tension, front strap checkering, etc. would be alot of fun.

Back in the mid 80's I bought a then-new Ruger Super Single Six with the .22/.22 Magnum cylinder option. Great gun that I eventually sold to buy some gear.
Now I'm thinking about buying another one. To those in the know, any reason why I shouldn't go with another new Super Single Six? Is Ruger quality as good or better than it was 40 years ago?
Thanks,
6

I own about 4 Rugers- I can’t say that they eclipse what they used to be, but they make some tough revolvers. The trigger pull can be on the heavy side but that can be corrected pretty readily.
