I took this iPhone pic this morning through a window in our living room. An Eastern Towhee, a male and female cardinal, and a finch caught in mid flight, that looks like it's sitting on an invisible wire. Attachments:

oldier playing guitar. This was at our compound in Habbiniyah, Iraq in 2003. He was an Abrams tank driver and whenever he could, he'd stop in and rock out on my Squire Strat. I shot this with a Nikkormat 35mm SLR, with Plus-x and a light green filter. These are very interesting pics, guys. I'm a fan of B/W. Click on it to enlarge.

This picture was taken from the roof of the Baghdad Hotel. I worked out of it as a security contractor after retiring from the Army. It is a view of a Blackhawk helicopter heading in for a landing in the Green Zone, just across the Tigris River from us. They sometimes fired flares to indicate if casualties were on board or to throw off heat-seeking missiles. This was in 2006. I took it with a mid-priced point and shoot, (can't recall the brand).

Went hiking today at one of my favorite local winter spots. Full sunlight so a bit challenging but that's part of the fun. That's a beaut, FlyonNylon! The hanging branch adds to it.

You get some super results with your experiments, De Ville! Those metal tanks look like pure Sci Fi. The b/w shot of rain by the street light is somehow soothing, with the strobe effect of the light flickering on the streaks of rain. And with a spider web, no less. You get out there in all sorts of conditions. The arcs of the stars, circling above, is super cool, too. Great shots.

This is a destroyed Russian made T-72 Tank. I had a roll of color film in my Nikkormat that day; this one of only a few color pics I took over there. It was ASA 100. I know that my pictures here are interesting, in a stark and ghastly way, but I also realize that the location and subject matter I had the opportunity to shoot is mostly what carries these pictures. You guys have a great eye. I feel inspired to try and take some pictures that are actually beautiful.

I've always thought you had an eye for framing your shots, and in a war type situation what's happening is so raw, and real. The spontaneity of the shots I imagine help to lock in the realness of the situations.
In your tank shot, one of the first things I noticed was that being inside that covered area of your vehicle gave you a natural "window framing" of the shot of the tank. I like the tank shot a lot. It's very good.

Wiredog, I was reviewing the thread, and discovered your above comments that I missed, apparently because we posted at the same time. My apologies, I didn't see your post. Thank you very much, indeed. The one b/w photo with the street light at night; that is actually snow falling. It was a long exposure to get that streak effect, but I never really understood why the streaks are choppy looking. I thought maybe something to do with the camera's sensor sampling frequency, but I know those high pressure sodium lamps also run at a certain frequency. It had not occurred to me that it may be the light creating that choppy effect. I think your explanation is more plausible.
Those tanks are located right here in Bellingham WA down on the waterfront where GP (Georgia Pacific) a large paper mill used to be years ago. GP had done a lot of polluting down there, and eventually shut down. I think they were priced out with the cost of electricity IIRC. The site has been cleaned up quite a bit. Those tanks are enormous. Behind them is a smaller harder to see but equally cool looking round ball shaped take, and to the right if you look hard, you can see Bellingham bay. It was a windy day, and there is chop on the water. The trees in the back ground are from Lummi Island.
The "arcs of the stars" are wholly dependent on where the camera is pointed. In that shot I am pointed at the north stars, and that is why the we get the circular arc effect as the earth turns. As you point towards the equator, the star trails straighten out.
You may have seen this before as I linked it at the FDP a few years ago, but in the linked time-lapse video you will see how different the star trails look as the camera points further away from the Polaris.
